Looking for Mt. Ranier Advice.

#1 Going up with the family to Seattle next month and one of the suggestions is that we drive up to explore/hike Ranier. Is it worth the 3 hour drive each way for a day trip?
#2 What is the hiking like and what other things can we do on or around the mountain with kids?
And the really dumb question.... Is it even possible to drive up high enough to where an easy hike could be made to where there might be some snow/ice on the ground for the kids to see?

We went about 4 years ago in July. I think it's worth the drive for sure. It was one of the most beautiful places! We drove up the mountain to Mystic Lake...didn't do any hiking, just walked around the lake area. There were trails though. There was also still plenty of snow on the ground.
The drive up to the lake is insane too. Here's some pictures we took.

Also, I don't remember it being 3 hours. I think it's closer to 2.

Is it really 3 hours away, wow don't remember it being that long.
If you drive up to Paradise Lodge, you can very likely hike to snow. As far as your question, I love the outdoors so I'd do it easily rather than stay in the city. Bring a jacket just in case.

I hope like hell that is closer to the truth. Our friends live in the northern part of Seattle and the mapquest showed 3 hours.
I'm pretty much convinced we will make the trip. The kids will be blown away as they've never really been on a real mountain of any kind.

Absolutely. I did a summit attempt a couple of years ago and it's beautiful even if you aren't on the mountain itself.

Actually they just found a large magma chamber below Mt Ranier.
best of luck.
best of luck.

We went on June 1st up to Paradise (the highest point you can drive to, 5400') and there was still 135" of snow on the ground.
The NPS site says that during August that area is supposed to be grassy meadows. Depending on how far you are willing to hike I would bet you could find some snow or ice.
I'm not sure how far the Muir snowfield is from paradise, but it didn't look too terribly difficult from the maps.
I would definitely go again, and I'm not an outdoors person.

Could be then, depending on the time watch for traffic. I would personally leave real early so you are not rushed when you get there.

The trail to panorama point would likely put you in snow areas. But NPS rates that hike as strenuous, so it depends on the kids.
The late snow season had a ton of snow on the trail in mid July from what I've heard, so I'm guessing you won't have to get all that close to the snowfield to get to some.

True.
I haven't looked in a while, but I think I remember some trails from Paradise that I thought would get us to snow and were rated easy or intermediate by the NPS.
Turns out, it didn't matter. Paradise looked like this when we got there.
This was the best pic I got because every time I tried to get one of the mountain, the clouds rolled by.

Hasn't it ALWAYS been considered basically an active volcano?

Their cherries are fricking delicious.

Parts of Seattle sit on pyroclastic flows from previous eruptions. Next time it blows, it'll be a hot time in the old town..

This is true also. Best cherries anywhere IMHO.

Just got back from Seattle area 2 days ago. We stayed north of Seattle in Shoreline and made a nice trip up to Bellingham and east up around Mt Baker. Easy and scenic drive to Artist Point - elevation 5100. Nice views of mountains and glacier and plenty of snow for kids. Road just opened on July 1st. Snow was still powdery and several families were sledding down some hills.
Did some easy hikes in Bellingham to view some waterfalls, drove the coastal hills through Fairhaven and enjoyed one of the many brew pubs for lunch.

Go to Mt. Baker and the North Cascades.

Was just there 2 weekends ago
We brought the sleds up and went sledding in the 75 degree weather. It felt really good.

Yes, it's worth it.

Lots of trails up there. Do some research beforehand on which ones are the best for how long you want to hike (wta.org would be a good place to start). The visitor center up there might have some interesting stuff for them too.

If you're coming up here next month, all of the snow will be gone for where you can drive to. There are glaciers to hike on on the way up to Camp Muir though. That trail will get you up into the snow. Could be quite a hike though.
