Which termite prevention option should I choose?

I am ignorant when it comes to this stuff, so I'd like to see which on of these options you would choose for a pier and beam home.
Quote 1: Chemical- Trench and treat all piers and plumbing lines. Drill and treat piers as needed using Termidor. 5 year retreatment. Semi-Annual inspections.
Quote 2: Bait- Install Sentricon bait system around house and carport. Spot treat underneath home with Termidor. Never needs retreatment. Semi-Annual inspections.
Those are direct quotes from the proposal. I was advised that either one of these options would be equally effective for my situation. Pricing is similar. The bait quote would cost me about $4 more per month over a 5-year period. So my question isn't about cost, but the method employed. I just want to make sure to choose wisely on my first home.

Buy Termidor online. Do it yourself every 6-12 months.

1 - you always need re-treatments imo

Curious about this as well... Bought a home in march. It has the terminix deals all around the house. I assume they are bait stations? Look like oversized pop up sprinkler systems.
I didn't have termites when I bought it... I'd like to keep it that way.
Is terminix good? Massey or anyone in particular?

Every house should be treated after a certain time length, no matter the product or system used. Termidor should give you a 7-10 year life (most companies will give you 10), so not sure why quote 1 is only giving you a 5 year life on it. Baiting systems seems to be a little more of an indirect form of treating, where as Trench and Treat is directly around all areas that termites can enter.
And although Termidor is not a bait by any means, it works almost as the same as it is undetected by termites and passed along from termite to termite. It is highly effective on the two main subterranean termites we have in LA.

do you have to digg a freakin 6in trench for termidor? or can you just pour it at the edge of the slab?

If you don't mind sharing, what are these going to run you? I need to treat my house.

No prob...
Quote 1: Chemical-
Service fee: $658
Twice a year inspection: $85 per
5 year retreatment
Quote 2: Bait-
Service fee: $508
Twice a year inspection: $150 per
"never needs retreatment"
That quote is from The Bug Man. I also got quotes from Orkin and Salvant. Orkin wanted $1300 with $150 annual. Salvant was more than that.
The guy with The Bug Man said that their prices are lower right now because they are getting a deal from Dow that is helping to subsidize the costs. True or not, the methods of service are similar with all three companies, so I'll go low.

Yes.
If you only pour the product against a house it will not soak properly into the soil. Therefore, you will not have an adequate amount of product in certain areas, therefore limiting the amount of coverage/protection. Short answer, no because it won't work as good. It doesn't have to be a perfect 4" x 6" trench around your house. Just take a shovel and chop up the soil a few inches deep and you should be fine.

And with quote number two, they say it never needs treatment again but what the might be mentioning is that they won't be charging you for another treatment ever again. However, they are charging you another $1170 for the next 9 renewals after the initial treatment, which more than makes up for them not charging. So it breaks down to them charging an extra $1300 every 10 years (the life of Termidor) for them to "not treat again". That would be my thought process at least.

The sentricon baits are a scam. When activity is found at a station you're supposed to put the poison in but when you pull up the station, you're disrupting the tunnels and the termites might not return. There's good info about that scam on the internet.

Turn off lights when they swarm

I had option 1 several years ago and have had no issues since.

That's not true, Sentricon bait is now always active in the ground. You do not have to add poison when activity is found.

Whichever option you choose, make sure you read the contracts in full and all the fine print before signing anything. Treating the home is only half of the protection. You want to make sure that the company is going to repair damage if you get an infestation in the future, especially for Formosan termites. Last thing you want is a Formosan infestation costing $10,000+ and footing the bill yourself. Some companies have vague terms and conditions that can deny you a claim. The best protection is expensive, but worth it.

Go w/ Termidor. I own a pest control company and this is mainly what I use for termite treatments. The only time I'd recommend bait stations is if you have a crawl space that's not easily accessible in order to trench and treat around the pilings/piers.
Also, sometimes techs can get careless/lazy and not check every bait station like they should be. That problem is supposed to be solved by a scanner that scans each stations bar codes, but I've seen plenty of times where that is just ignored.

I use Arrow. Annual inspections run me $150 and the 5 year retreatment is around $600. My house isn't on piers though

quote:Yeah, I'm almost positive my contract with Arrow doesn't cover sustained damage
