Interesting analysis. It made me curious as to Minter's stats his first year playing MLB. Minter in 2012

There is one HUGE...GAPING flaw in your argument. Minter's first year starting was in 2011 NOT '12...if you remember correctly, 2011 was perhaps the greatest defense in the history of college football. You're forgetting we had a 1st rounder in Reid who was a run stopper, fricken Tyrann, Brockers and Logan, Montgomery, Mingo...etc etc

Minter didn't come close to having the opportunities Welter had. The following year in 2012 we lost a lot of people, so more was asked of Minter and he doubled his output. We were weak by our standards on the line and in the run game last year. Yet Welter was still a black hole. So the two are not comparable at all.

Also, Minter went from True Sophomore to True Junior...not unheard of to see that type of improvement. It is pretty out there to see an enormous spike between your 4th and 5th year on the team.

Opportunities? You do realize the whole 4-3 concept involves opportunities for linebackers, especially middle ones. Try again.

You are correct. The 21 solo tackles by Minter was in his first year starting in 2011. That's the apples to apples- Minter's great 2012 season that everyone remembers was when he was playing fast and knew the defense really well. When people say that 80 tackles by a MLB is piss poor or that 25 solo tackles must be the lowest total in LSU history, they have short memories. Minter's 21 solos in 2011 was just a few years ago. Many here wanted Chief to find another MLB when Minter was just getting it together in 2011. Glad he stuck with the guy he believed in.

Ehh, race does play a part. Not to everybody, but to some, from both sides.

Minter seemed to have a chest full of tools they Welter doesn't seem to possess. (But he does have the "chest") And everyone saying welter ran a 4.6. I'd like to see that. And maybe he does have straight away speed, but on the field the lack of speed stands out several times a game. Anyone that denies seeing it is either bias or really not watching the games. There is a difference in explosive and straight aways speed obviously.

Maybe TIGERLEE could donate some tendons to Welter and get them implanted in his legs to make it an even playing field

We really need to stop the Minter to Welter comparisons. Minter was a gap filling, thumper, and one of the surest tacklers on the team. One thing I loved about Minter, when he got to you, you were down. I mean Minter stopped forward progress on contact. It was a rare occurrence to see a back break a Minter tackle, are even gain yards after contact. Minter was a beast and a certain NFL talent.

I'm still waiting for Welter to fill a gap and bust open a play.

I recall Welter having one good smack last year, and if my memory serves me right, it was against one of our less threatening opponents.

I can't think of a single play that was made in a SEC contest.

Can someone please support Welter's case by reminding me of any significant plays the guy made. I truly can't remember. I know he made a sack vs Iowa. Other than that, I am really clueless as to this Welter love. Of course I support the Tigers, but I don't support what I feel are bad personnel decisions.

I'll say again, Beckwith is a freak, and Garrett's high school footage instantly tells me that this kid has more in the "toolbox" than Welter.

Welter was badly exposed vs Bama and Ole Piss. I'm shocked he still is considered our best.

Didn't Feist have an incredible spring game racking up the team leading tackles? I honestly don't know too much about him but I love a player that is always in the mix making solid tackles, showing off his athleticism.

Welter is too much of a reactor and doesn't have the power or speed to make up for it. I know we have a boat load of talent behind him and I hope they rotate in rather often. I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't be the case. We settled for mediocre/bad play out of him last year...

Interesting analysis. It made me curious as to Minter's stats his first year playing MLB. Minter in 2012: 21 solo tackles, 40 assists, 1 sack, and only 3 unassisted tackles for loss, for a total of -15 yards. Minter also had 1 pbu, 1 PD, and 1 qbh. By your logic, Chief should have found someone else to play Mike in 2012. That would have been a shame, as Minter had a great 2nd year playing the position. Just comparing apples to apples. I think Minter's 2012 year shows that Chief knows what he is doing with the MLB position.. It is also fairly easy to see that Chief asks his MLB to do much more than just play his own position, which takes longer to develop than the other positions.

We were comparing Kevin Minter's junior year with Welter's redshirt junior year. Minter was less experienced in 2012 and twice as productive as the redshirt junior Welter in 2013. The other thing you are neglecting to mention is that Welter's first year starting was a direct result of both his suspension in 2012, and the fact that he couldn't beat out Minter. Finally, Kevin Minter only started 11 games out of 14 in 2011--two less that Welter started in 2013. He didn't play in many sets with less than 3 linebackers since we had Ryan Baker and Hatcher/Francois in on those Mustang packages. With all of those facts now laid out, people can draw their own conclusions.

Would this whole argument be null/void if for this year, Chief had decided to run a 3-4 instead? Or do most of you feel he's so bad he still wouldn't play?

That's a shame.
We have so much talent and depth that I feel or better players than Welter, I absolutely forgot about Ronnie. Who I also feel is an absolute beast.

Even in his very sparing playing time, Debo Jones has made more memorable plays than Welter. I'll say it again, you don't have to find playmakers, they jump out at you.

Game 1 vs UNC, it was obvious what he had in Mathieu, it didn't matter that he was a scrawny freshman. Making plays his nothing to do with size, as some suggest Welter will be more effective, since he's bigger and more mature. That's a joke in my opinion. If Welter was a force, or even a dependable player, trust me, we all would know it, and it wouldn't be such a fiery topic.

But that slow white undersized young man would knock anyone on this boards head off. I really hope the guy improves and shuts everyone up. He's really a great kid and deserves respect. What I saw was hesitation, minter never hesitated, welter is usually in the right spot but that hesitation makes him late to the ball, can be fixed.

Absolutely.

Here's how it goes with these fricking retards on this board.
Imagine If welter were black....

The sole reason I get the racist label is bc of the JJ JLEE situation.
Anything since then I've posted is a troll effort. Just perpetrating it, it's easier to just go along with it now than try to argue about it.
There's posters here that post that about me that weren't even around during that time.
I'm ok with it.

Fact is I took sides with the white qb over the black one so just like in the media, politics ect, people love to point the racism finger at whitey.
It's a double standard with race and everybody knows it.. It's ok of you can't/won't admit or acknowledge it, doesn't make it any less true.

If Clifton Garrett or Kendall beckwith were better than welter they would start. Why is that so hard for you fricking retards to understand?
Honestly I don't have a favorite, I want the best player to play... I just have general dislike for the know it all idiots on this site.

Reality of all this is, the players don't care.
They all bleed the same, sweat the same, cry, rejoice and work hard together the same.
But, you'd had to play football to understand that.... Creaming your pants on the recruiting board over 16 and 17 year old boys and being king of xbox doesn't qualify you.

I hope welter blows it up this season. For 2 reasons.
1) make us a better football team
2) so I can watch you hating kids squirm and crawfish.

It won't be any skin off my nose if he has a monster season. I'd prefer it. If he's a beast, we're going to be really, really good on defense. He is capable of improving, but everyone needs to realize that he really NEEDS to improve or he won't see much of the field with the other guys breathing down his neck.

I don't doubt that for one second, that he would put me in the hospital.
Problem is, he needs to do this to Gurley and Yeldon.
If not, what he can do to a fan in the stands is of no relevance.

P.S.
I'll clarify again, my analysis of him has nothing to do with skin color (personal note. I have been in an interracial relationship for 10 plus years {married}, in the heart of the south, so if you think race moves me in anyway, it is a non issue). If it makes you feel any better, I though Barrow was just as much as a liability as Welter. And trust me when I say this, when I put on Trey Quinn's tape, I truly expect that this dude will be an absolutely monster. I don't knock what I see because he is "white."

Minter was splitting time in 2011, Welter was not. There was a specific play vs Ole Miss where it was 3rd and long, and Dr Bro Wallace out ran Welter, who took a god awful angle, and picked up the 3rd down. That play drove me insane
