I glad somebody mentioned Emmert. He made Saban the Saban we see today. He taught LSU you get what you pay for in a coach. Even if every ticket to a game was sold, LSU lost about $ 1 million per game at the end of the Dinardo era by having 20k no shows which meant loss of concessions and nobody buying merchandise.

Yeah saying Emmert is the most responsible is quite a stretch. But so is saying that Saban is responsible for our continued success.

Condtinued success --- I don't think he means literally. More along the lines of lsu being afforded the position they are in today because of Sabah

Without Emmert we have Joe Dean making another hire. Without Emmert there is no telling how long we go without making the commitment to spending money to hire the best, to provide them with the facilities to be successful, etc.

It's an extremely simplistic way of looking at it, but it isn't entirely false.

Right. But he didn't coach football games, he didn't hire assistants, he didn't gameplan, he wasn't recruiting, he wasn't developing players, most importantly he wasn't winning games.

Maybe someone else would have come along eventually and changed the mindset the way he did. But there is no way to to know when, or if, it would have happened.
Everyone mentioned has played a part, but Emmert is the one that made the commitment and got the ball rolling. That is not debatable.

If it were simplistic I don't think people would be thinking he meant that Saban still has a hand in lsu's continued success. Like are people being for real with this?

saban was a relative unknown when LSU hired him. No one knew or expected him to end up being the best in college football. It's not like we went out and threw a pile of cash at the #1 coach on everyone's radar.

I agree, there is never enough credit given to somebody who comes in and maintains excellence. You have to deal with constant comparisons to the person/people who got the program there in the first place. Many programs lose a legendary coach and they start a decline into being a mediocre program or worse. Miles has been here about twice as long as Saban with a better winning percentage and he still faces the comparison

We definitely went out and threw a pile of cash at him. He was one of only 3 or 4 coaches making over a million per after we hired him in late 99. This coming after a decade of losing and doing things on the cheap, the Joe Dean way.
ETA: In addition to throwing a pile of cash at him Emmert also made the commitment to the facilities and everything else it would take to make the program one of the best in the country, not just competing to be one of the best in the West. Stadium expansion was underway, but he committed to the new academic center, the football ops complex, etc.

I don't have any more time to argue this one today, but these are his exact words...
