Doesn't really mean anything. I tuned in and I hate soccer. It's the United States going against the world in a sport we are traditionally not that good in. It's a great story line and draw for that reason alone.
The whole nation has a rooting interest in the outcome of the game which is most certainly not the case with the NBA Finals or the World Series.

it was a great fricking match

It was 5pm or earlier in over half the country. Is that a better time slot than the WS or NBA finals has?

It was really good. The other stand out to me was Netherlands v Australia. Fun to watch.

I like how Univision is being added in, when no other sport does that. Can we include the Canadian television networks when discussing hockey now too? A lot of people are signed up for League Pass and MLB TV, can we include them?
I don't have a problem with soccer, but the sport looks desperate when it includes every single last number for soccer, and then forgets to do that for all the other sports.

I watched and I think soccer is a puss sport, but it is the U.S.A. After viewing that crap it made me say frick soccer even more. How in the hell do you give more time? Did they just want Portugal to tie?

The extra time went from 4-5 because the substitution took too long.

What? That people will tune in to cheer on the US in international competitions? That doesn't seem like a big revelation to me.

They don't care about the gump demographic. They have you on CFB, nascar and honey boo boo. All of your advertising dollars are accounted for. And you still watched.

Univision was a small savior when Time Warner's dumbasses dropped out the fricking video feed for the whole 2nd half the game. I would've normally been watching on the ESPN channel had that not happened.

Did they include all of the channels that covered the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament? Or the multiple "team centric" channels they used in later rounds. I'm asking out of genuine curiosity.

Plus, here’s the latest big-picture data for the “Americans do/do not watch soccer” debate: The 2006 World Cup coverage on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC combined to average 2 million viewers in 2006, then 2.9 million in 2010 and now 4.3 million in 2014.
The point is, it's happening....

quote:I don't believe they accounted for all of the people at public watch parties or people watching on ESPN3. If you add the number of people that watched the game in stadiums/bars/public areas around the country, then you could add a few more million to that number. The Univision number is basically the spanish speaking demographic inside the US.

What's happening? Stop being so vague.
Soccer is going to grow in the United States, there's no doubt. But the OP linked ratings to the NBA and World Series which is a rather spurious thing to do.

That was a perfect storm of a primo time slot and people champing at the bit with the long delay after the first game. I don't think you'd see that number at any other time than the final.
