To me, it is the advertising. It is EVERYWHERE. I feel less like at a football or baseball game and more like I am being sold a product or service the entire time. Take baseball, the beautiful new stadium is non-stop advertising. Even the cup holders have ads. Everywhere you look there is something somewhere being sold to you. Inbetween innings and plays we get bombarded with crappy commercial after commercial. The same is true with Tiger Stadium. Just about every available surface for advertising is being utilized. Having been to games for 30 years I can tell you this is sucking the experience out of the game. I feel less part of the environment and more of a "theater goer" or bystander.

Ads are part of sports so I am not suggesting we get rid of them altogether. They play an important part in generating revenue. Perhaps the athletic department should find a better balance and seek alternative avenues of revenue.

I agree LSU is on the slippery slope of a serious declining attendance issue.

LS has elite tailgating which will keep fans showing up, however LSU has tried to limit tailgating; trailer parking fees, limited trash cans, etc...

LSU also has a severe disconnect with administration and fans. They have royally screwed up parking and ease of getting To a game. 3-4 yrs ago lots of tailgating and traffic was good considering the amount of people and now we have fewer people attending games and a traffic nightmare. LSU is just a few small changes of getting people back.

Make ease of getting to a game easier by car and entering a gate of the stadium. Encourage fans to tailgate.

Pretty much nailed it. The whole environment has become a watered down cheese fest.

I will take my son in a few years like my dad did me (he's only 2 1/2). But you're right about a lot of the traditions we grew up with no longer being there.

The games now feel more like a movie set where we all take our places and turn it on for the cameras when back from a commercial break. Between "shoots", it's all cheesy filler material with people we don't care about being honored and top 40 music played for the students. Then, back from break ok everybody act like an LSU fan again once the cameras are on.

With all the new money coming in from the tv contracts, sec network etc- it seems the LSU athletic dept could back off some of the ridiculous things they are doing to raise money. Charging for on campus parking was a new low.

Honestly, I thought the same thing for a long time.

However, it has got to e a nightmare for the AD that we've allotted 35 million to the academic side for the next couple of years just to stay afloat. that's a lot of money the AD no longer has at its disposal.

Meanwhile, Alabama makes quite a few million more than us in revenue on top of not having to worry about their academic side

Its only going to get worse with the two new video boards.

I feel like I'm in sensory over load at LSU events now. The advertising is well past my ability to ignore it. They are invading our mental private space. The advertising overload does distance us from being part of the real event. It's no longer our beloved school's sporting events we attend. We attend a corporate sports event. Simple fact is LSU Sporting events as we knew them have ceased to exist.
It's not just LSU, this involves the whole of the NCAA. The "college sporting world" has changed.

Michigan's problem is that they haven't been that good the last few years. Michigan State coming off the Rose Bowl is not having that problem with students and regular season ticket holders albeit their stadium is smaller 75,000. Ohio State is not having problems. UM also has some bad luck with scheduling. MSU and OSU are on the road.

It's about winning. Plus don't expect the rest of the big ten to shed tears for Michigan.

I Agree LSU does go way overboard on ads. Other schools in the SEC don't, why can't LSU use less ads?

LSU is very close to the same problem-people staying at home and watching the game on TV

Already there for many. I could have afforded my seasons for the upcoming season. However, the last price increase essentially priced them out of the market for me not due to price but due to quality. The college FB atmosphere experience is nothing like it once was. Tailgating is getting nickeled and dimed out. Ditto for parking. If I want to go to a game in person, I can find tickets on the market or outside of the stadium. Otherwise, I bought a 60" screen this last Christmas for my den. It's a hell of a lot more comfortable there, good view, quality food at much better prices, no fighting crowds, no lines at the bathroom, no parking issues. I can go outside and put food on the pit. I can drink during the game and have no hassles over it. I think things have changed for good. Those trying to make the college game more like the NFL are simply killing college football for everyone else.

Before long, on radio you will be hearing the "Les Miles belch" brought to you by Burger Kind. When Les goes to take his pre-game crap, radio will bring us the "Les Miles fart" sponsored by some chicken house, and then the "initial Les Miles shite" will be broadcast compliments of some insurance company. I am exaggerating to make a point, but the commercialism is starting to get this ridiculous.

"They've manage to price lots of fans out.

I can afford it, I just choose not to.
Crap games is what's really done it for me though.
I'm not paying anything to see LSU play Appalachian state wanna be team."

INDEED!!!!

I don't get the "i would rather watch it on TV mindset".

When I was younger, I felt the same way. I am older, have other places that need my money, and probably more significant, have a lot more demands on my time at this point.

You get there. I love a live game as much as the next person. However, the game experience at LSU is not as good as it once was. I can't justify the money for the return I am getting on it.

I have video of the TB marching into the stadium as well as several halftime shows and even a post-game band performance.

No, it is not the same as being there in person, but I am willing to trade off the inconveniences for the convenience of my den on most games.

Age wise, the heat gets a little harder to take at my age, so the Sept and some Oct games are out. Not sure it would make that much difference anyway as the Sept games are usually crap games. It's getting to where if you want the "college football experience" you find yourself going to a game at a smaller school. No it's not "big time", but you are getting charged through your arse for concessions or parking and there is simply not the hassle. I have been known to put something on to slow cook on pit, run up to Natchitoches and take in some of their game, then come home and sit down for an LSU game.

Re the comment bout UM's attendance problems being related to their W/L record. LSU is in the midst of it's golden yrs, winning at a clip never seen before and yet, for the Fla game last yr, there were barely 72,000 acutal butts in the stands. Had the stadium's expansion to 100K been compleleted then, that means there would have been over 30,000 no shows.Or almost half the old TS. JA has stated he "hopes" the new revenue from the SEC network, rough estimates being each school will get close to $30M annually, will reduce the need for raising ticket prices. IF LSU cann't draw more than 72,000 for the gators, what will the crowds be like if we drop to losing 4-5 games a season? And if you think that cann't happen, look at what happend to the gators last yr: they won 4 games.

I love my Tigers, and I live in Houston, but if you think I am paying $140 per ticket, no way! We are talking a college game, not a professional team! The average working Middle Class family (what's left of it!) cannot keep up with rising ticket prices, not to mention, food, gas, etc. has gone up, but not salaries! Hate to see it, but the college game is starting to be like pro teams- corporate tickets only appears to be the future...

It all comes down to value. I bleed passion for the tigers, and I would book flights just to attend the games from Arizona. My friend sold me a pair of his family season tix for past few years and seats were epic. Friends, family, and football-what's better?

I couldn't get to every game, but trying to sell tickets is damn near impossible unless taking a huge loss w TAF fees. I don't blame people for not paying that much--the blame rests w me. I realized all the cost of flights, tickets, and time element to watch ads, crappy games, and listen less and less to the band isn't worth it anymore. Half the crowd is gone by 4th qtr, and the epic environments are further apart. They are still there, but we know when they will be most likely--Bama/Florida/auburn.

I've decided I can stay home and enjoy not just LSU but all other great games. When a great game is in tiger stadium I can way overpay for great seats and STILL come out way cheaper.

I graduated in 07. The thing that's changed the most to me is the herding of tailgating away from the center of campus. When I was a student, you could walk through the entire campus to experience the atmosphere. Now, people are parking away from campus to escape the pay lots, traffic is worse because you know have a greater concentration of people in a smaller area. Nicholson is a mad house.

Tiger Stadium is definitely different, but I can't really put my finger on why. The OPs article has some good points.

It all started with this 40 dollar parking shite.

In the name of greed they are single handedly fricking up one of the greatest thing LSU has to offer to fans, alums, students and visitors.

I'm glad I don't give as much a shite about it now, as I did 10 years ago.
I get stadium club tickets for game or two a year and that's enough for me.

One thing they can't frick up for fans is away games.
I enjoy a road game or two per year....that's still fun as always.

Amen to that! The LSU away game crowd is much more like the old school Tiger Stadium crowd. And without all the bullshite.
