I think that a lot of people living New Orleans before the storm lived there because they didn't see a way out. Now, everyone who lives there does so because they want to. The whole city is there because they believe in it. It's a whole different attitude.

To a degree. I live here by choice, in 2004 I would have said I live here b/c it's where I was born. Funny just about everyone I meet now my age is from somewhere else. Its rare I can ask people where they went to HS these days.

That's unfortunate
I get the impression Glassman went to Newman or maybe Country Day. I understand after spending $20,000 a year on high school wanting to send your kid to a prestigious university. What I' don't get are the kids who then go on to OleMiss or Alabama. I mean, why spend that much on high school just to leave the state for the same education you can get at LSU .
And I say this as someone with 3 girls at McGehee.

I know, it's truly bizarre. I mean, why not Vanderbilt or Rice?

A lot of the ones who end up at SEC schools come from so much money that the tuition is a drop in the ocean for the families. Some just aren't nearly smart enough to get into Vandy or RIce

So what's the draw to Ole Miss and Alabama?

Well, why not South Carolina or Georgia? Funny how it's LSU 2 biggest rivals (Alabama Ole Miss)

I'd be willing to bet they did.

Some people aren't turned on by LSU/BR and want to go farther away, and Ole Miss and Bama are fun places. I don't think academics are the decisive issue here

2014 Nola > 2004 Nola
More restaurants. I think I read somewhere there are more than 400 new restaurants in the metropolitan area. The revitalization of Freret St and the CBD/Warehouse District is night and day.

There is an awful lot of excitement and optimism right now. It seems like once a week there is news of a new tech company moving to the New Orleans area.
What tech companies are moving to New Orleans exactly?

Look it up yourself if you care.
Most are small start ups and such. GE technology opened up a small office

So no real companies that can employ a large educated workforce.

What are the most immediate and noticeable differences, in your eyes, between pre-Katrina New Orleans and present-day New Orleans?
Honestly it looks the same to me.
