re: New Orleans 2004 vs. New Orleans 2014

One of the biggest changes is how much more expensive NO is than it was ten years ago. Rents in some places have doubled, taxes are higher, 25 cent oyster night is now fifty cent oyster night...

2004 Property Taxes- x
2014 property taxes- 3x
And the Saints are a lot better.
And don't get me started on how much more homeowner's and flood insurance has increased, for a man-made flood.

I think that a lot of people living New Orleans before the storm lived there because they didn't see a way out. Now, everyone who lives there does so because they want to. The whole city is there because they believe in it. It's a whole different attitude.
I like this and I can get behind this statement. New Orleans isn't for everyone, but you cannot deny that it is a city that is experiencing exponential growth and positive strides.
New Orleans is seeing more and more young and educated people who are flocking to the city to work or start their new careers. People are finally enthusiastic about the city and its future. It's an exciting time to live in the city, that's for sure.

Better than what was here in the past jackass.
Until companies move to the city that are capable of hiring hundreds of educated employees New Orleans will not improve. Non-profits and start ups will not make New Orleans better.

Do any of you know if Expedia is planning on relocating to New Orleans?
ETA: Never mind. Found it. Expedia plans Hub in New Orleans

Right, it really hasn't improved

NOLA is a great city with much to offer. It's location is great for inshore/offshore fishing, hunting and even a quick gulf coast beach trip.
IMHO, having been born, raised, and live in NOLA is to actually live in Metairie. 5-10 minutes for all that NOLA offers while not living in Orleans Parish.

I agree to make the next jump big companies are needed but it is absurd to think the city has had no improvement because corporations haven't flocked here. Start ups and non-profits are much better than nothing at all. There are tons of young professionals heading here from all over the country and while they may not be making tons of money, it is still a great thing for the city.

NOLA doesn't have any Fortune 500 HQs outside of Entergy, but the city has added hundreds of white collar jobs from companies like Gameloft and GE. I think each has/will have about 300 New Orleans employees. Just recently, a software company in Atlanta announced a move to Kenner. 300 or so jobs.

Also, Shell resigned their downtown NO lease and chevron is expanding in Covington.

International Ship Holdings just moved their HQ to Nola. The banana company(Chiquita) moved their shipping operations here also.
There are two hospitals costing north of a $ billion that will open next year that I think will open up a lot more things with a little medical biotec corridor.
Tulane Ave is the latest in a list of streets starting to go through its gentrification process.
Several national publications have written some great articles about what has been happening here. Anyone with half a brain can realize that a lot of great things are happening.

It's quite the undertaking for companies with hundreds of employees to up and move their corporate headquarters.
However, every major company began life as a startup.
I truly believe New Orleans' best hope to start having some large corporate offices is via companies that grow up here. Of course, that takes years (decades) to happen.
In the meantime, everytime a company puts a regional / satelite office here, it helps.

Young people are moving to nola, but they're not staying. When it's time to start making babies they haul it because they can't afford housing or tuition. I don't blame them.
The only people who think nola is affordable anymore are the wretched Brooklyn transplants.
Oh we have better beer options in 2014, way better.

Another old myth.
Sure quite a few people leave when they are ready to settle down and start a family, but more and more or staying. It's part of the reason areas like Mid-City and Gentilly are doing well right now.
I do agree though that N.O. is getting to be an expensive place to live.

The silver lining to that is it's pricing out a lot of the trash, pushing them out into Jefferson, Slidell, and Da Parash

I see it happening, but some areas will stay section 8, ie The East.

Oh, it's happening like crazy in alot of areas. I'm actually kind of shocked that more in the black community aren't bitching more about it.

While that may be true for parts of central city & 7th ward, I have seen first hand this happening around where I live in the riverbend. properties on Oak St. around snake & jakes have kicked out alot of section 8 tenants and either sold or renovated & rented due to higher market values. This is happening all over uptown / broadmoor.
Most of the displaced ppl are going to the East, which makes me think it may get worse before it gets better (if ever).
