Spending a week in Germany. Visiting my grandparent's hometown near Munich. Anybody got recommendations of something to do besides beer? Best beer lounges?
Oh, and yes, GERMANS

Visit BMW
ETA: Better than that, see if you can rent something very fast and drive on "The Green Hell." It's not too far away.
Or, Autobahn.

If you're going in the summer hit up the beer gardens, not "lounges." Check out this website.

My favorite beer garden in Munich was Metzgerwirt. It's close to the Nymphenburg palace. We randomly came across it, and it was a really great meal.
if you can make it to the mountains then I highly recommend doing so. We took a train to Garmish. It's about one hour out of Munich. Amazing town and the Alps are indescribably beautiful.
Honestly though, by the time you leave you won't want to see any more German food for a long time.
eta- Munich is a really cool town. It's absolutely beautiful too. People are very friendly as well.

hofbrauhaus is an overpriced tourist trap

Take a train south into the Alps and do some hiking. It's stupid beautiful and there are huts to drink beer and eat sausages at every couple miles. I hiked some along the Germany/Austria border last year. Much better than any of the cities I went to.

That, if you've never been to Munich, you should still go to once.

I got very lucky. I have a bunch of 3rd and 4th cousins in Germany who are very excited to see me and have rooms available.

Go to Augustiner Keller. It is far and away the best beer hall in Munich, IMO. Augustiner is delicious and so is the food. Definitely visit the English Gardens and see the Rathaus Glockenspiel. Schloss Nymphenburg is cool and so are many of the surrounding area Schlosses (castles), including Neuschwanstein to the south. Staying in Fussen one night is definitely worth it.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is really cool, too. It's a preserved medieval town not too terribly far from Munich to the north.
Dachau is also very interesting.

Augustiner Helles.
Drink as much as possible.
Go to the local brewery or any local brew hall.

By far my favorite lager and is up there among my favorite beers in the world.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is very nice. Take a trip up to the Zugspitze, highest point in Germany and down the other side into Austria. Bad Tolz is on the way to Garmisch from Munich and is a pretty town to stroll around with many nice Fachwerkhauser. Very close to Munich is Dachau, old concentration camp. Very eye opening and surprisingly emotional tour.

I'm pretty sure they keep a few of them open year round now. I found some Thanksgiving week last year.

I'm very jealous. You're going to have a blast! I haven't been since 2009.

quote:This is solid advice. Spend two days and one night in the Garmisch / Oberammergau / Murnau area. Beautiful countryside, Alps, small towns to putter around in, etc. And get to the top of the Zugspitze - trust me.
