Why not have someone on a short lease and replace with Nola
Because Nola insists on a one-year lease and he won't accept anything shorter. Otherwise we lose our security deposit.

There is absolutely no reason to not start Nola tomorrow. He's rested and ready to go and if you lose tomorrow that means that's one extra game you have to play with a weak bullpen (depth wise)

Ideal scenario is Nola goes 8 innings, use Broussard for the 9th, and you have every pitcher on our team available for the last two games (minus Nola and Poche). Though one of those guys could probably pitch an inning if we need them to).

I was 100% behind this for Ole Miss. But now it's Arkansas without their ace pitcher on their 3rd consecutive game and LSU with red-hot bats. We can beat Arky with anyone pitching, having Nola to secure the finals would be sweet. I understand where everyone is coming from, but Arky pulling the upset changed things.

False. Tomorrow is not a gimme.

It would be more in a long relief role, like coming in early in the 2nd/3rd inning.

Can it backfire? Sure, but if he enters the game early, anyone that starts in the game can be ready to roll on Saturday vs whoever and you're in the same position pitching-wise if we win.

It's an option on the table.

If Maineri thinks we have a legit shot as a top 8 seed, he may roll the dice and save Nola for Sat. If he wants to guarantee a regional bid, he will throw Nola tomorrow and hope he can piece together the pitching staff for Sat/Sun.

Absolutely not. Our best chance to win the tournament is to pitch Nola tomorrow. No question. You want LSU to have a pitching advantage later on in the tournament? Then let's not get cute here, beat ourselves tomorrow, and end up having to play an extra game because of our own stupidity. Do you not remember what happened the last time Bouman pitched against Arkansas? Let Nola get the win tomorrow, then we have a well rested Bouman for Saturday who can pitch against a team that has already used all their weekend starters and will probably have tired bullpen.

I know right, that's why Bouman pitched a no hitter against Arkansas last time he pitched against them. Oh wait, he actually gave up 4 runs in the first inning and was driven from the game and we ended up losing 10-4.

It's not a gimmie, but Arkansas has used their only 2 weekend starters (their 3rd is out) already and is down to starting a mid-week pitcher. Their bullpen has thrown 5 2/3 innings these last 2 days among 3 of their best relievers.

I'd definitely not be opposed to starting Bouman with a short leash and then putting in Cartwright/Bugg if it's a close game. The way we're scoring runs and the way Arkansas is unable to score runs leads me to believe pitching Nola would be a waste. Save him for his normal slot to clinch us the spot in the championship game.

Bouman was hurt and not 100% IIRC, he was out for a while after that game.

That was like Bouman's second game back after his injury.

He was held out the whole next week as well after the Arkansas game.

He wasn't healthy. Not going to get benched for 1 week for 1 bad inning.

The "world's most knowledgeable baseball fans" are at it again. There is much fail in this thread. It is laughable.

The brainiac that suggested that some random bullpen pitcher start tomorrow and be on "a short lease" with Nola waiting in the wings to pitch long relief takes the cake.

Anyone that has paid any amount of attention knows that Mainieri uses his 2 main guys in the first two games of this tournament, then shuts them down for the rest of the weekend to have them ready on full rest for next week. So NO, Nola or Poche' will not be "available to throw a few pitches this weekend". And by the way, how has this strategy worked out in the past for the coach? His record in this tournament is 19-4 with 4 titles. I will trust that he knows what he is doing.

The opponent tomorrow is irrelevant. Mainieri knew probably 2 weeks ago that Nola was going to pitch on Thursday of this tournament, regardless of the situation. (believe it or not, coaches sit down and look ahead and plan such stuff). I don't care how weak Arkansas looks on paper. It doesn't matter. He has always coached this tournament based on what LSU needs, not who the opponent is. His main guys get their normal weekly game, some bullpen guys get a chance to do their thing, then you go home and get ready for regionals. So go ahead and pose ridiculous scenarios for the week and weekend. I will go with the guy who has a closet full of SEC tournament trophies.

Forgive my ignorance here but have we previously used this where a regional bid was tentatively at stake? Some here think a national seed is within reach but I feel that is too far away. However a sweep of the tournament would be huge for securing a regional host. If we were to win today without Nola and he dominated Ark/Vandy/Ole Miss to get us into Sunday that would sit very well.

I do 100% see the logic in throwing Nola today if you need to ensure he is rested for the regional. However if we end up a 1 seed then Nola can pitch the Saturday and have the needed rest.

A side note to all of this.. the kid throwing for Arkansas today is named Poche, same as Jared. His momma and daddy are from Norco and moved to Texas after marriage. His daddy and McKunes daddy played high school ball together. He was highly rated coming out of high school.

I don't get why everyone thinks today is some sort of gimme and it doesn't matter who we pitch. Arkansas just beat Ole Miss #1 guy yesterday.

I understand that but I don't see the need to take any chances.
