but let's just say that one of the debaters on the subject of the President's war powers was a combat veteran. Wouldn't that particular experience be relevant to the subject?
nope, unless he was involved in policy making or a clerk on the court case, and then happened to go to war

Should that person's experience be kicked out as conjecture because it cannot be validated?
it should be kicked out for being irrelevant to the discussion at hand

OK, Zach is gonna reveal another secret. Those Towson kids are from UDL... Urban Debate League.
It started in the 1980s by Prof. Unger of Georgetown. He realized that debate coaches could get big time grant money by bringing the debate experience (white and male) to the inner city (black and female). He got charged with some type of crime and was forced to resign.
But the idea caught on during the 90s. It's still going on. It's a money maker for white debate coaches.
NADL
The problem is that inner city kids are too stupid to debate in traditional argumentation styles. So, to win, they have to create new rules.

So the person that was affected by the results of the actions of the President's war powers shouldn't be able to legitimately interject personal experience into the argument?

No. Because there is no way of verifying truth of personal experience in a debate. I debated Viet Nam intervention policy while in HS. I was beating the shite out my opponent. Then he used the argument that VN was wrong because his dad died there two months ago. He started to weep. He won.
After the debate he admitted to me that he way lying. His dad wasn't even in the military.

Yep

Appeal to Authority
Explanation
An appeal to authority is an argument from the fact that a person judged to be an authority affirms a proposition to the claim that the proposition is true.
Appeals to authority are always deductively fallacious; even a legitimate authority speaking on his area of expertise may affirm a falsehood, so no testimony of any authority is guaranteed to be true.
However, the informal fallacy occurs only when the authority cited either (a) is not an authority, or (b) is not an authority on the subject on which he is being cited. If someone either isn’t an authority at all, or isn’t an authority on the subject about which they’re speaking, then that undermines the value of their testimony.

I found this Atlantic article that translates what is going on to those still in touch with Western Civilization, and its seemingly objective and rational rules.
That's the very same link I posted on page 1, saying "here's the explanation".

I watched the video....I didn't see any debating...just seemed like a free style rap event or spoken word "jam". Seriously.

That is the most absurd shite I've ever read in my life (maybe). Who the frick are these judges rewarding this nonsense? What kind of people do these coaches think this produces? What an embarrassment.

i want to know who came up with the strategy of "ignore the subject and speak ethnically to expose privilege" strategy

When I was a young child, my dad would "play" me in football. He'd act as if he could not tackle me...or escape being tackled by me. And, it made me feel good and proud and powerful.
But, before long, it lost its value as I realized that I was being "given" the victory. he was faking it. It lost its ability to make me feel good.
These people are those that never grew out of the "victory is happiness" stage. These folks value the TITLE. They do not care if it was EARNED or not.
I've joked in this thread. But, this garbage sickens me.

white trash has the same issues and mentality, so don't feel too isolated.
society has just accepted white trash for being white trash long, long ago

I'm making no racial distinction.
I just lament the appearance of devaluing education, rules, points of order, etc.
The idea of "winning" while ignoring or rejecting rules is silliness.

I just watched the video. What in God's name was that? I thought debate was about not only making a point but doing it in a clear, concise manner. Most of that was undecipherable gibberish.

well at least this is a step up from the usual BDP/LCM people, who use physical domination/threats to win

Education has gone down the slippery slope and has landed in the quagmire of today.

Wtf did I just watch... fricking despicable

If I didn't love my country so much, and if it didn't disrespect the true heroes of our past, I could really start to hate it if this shite continues.

I actually didn't watch the video of the debate and only read the article. It seems as though there are 2 sets of rules depending on who you are and what irrelevant subject you bring up. Case in point:
The article does not even come close to doing it justice.
The girl for Towson is speaking so fast she can hardly breathe and she's raising her voice and not even completing full sentences.
It's like.... WTF is this shite?
It's not even a debate... it's like who can say random words as faster and louder and more obnoxious.

If they ain't yelling it and repeatedly at least three times they ain't doin' it right.
Watching that display made my heart hurt..
