We did it over a year ago. I have a friend that works for Direct TV. He told me to turn in my boxes and only keep internet. He said they will more than likely not come out and cut the cable part. He said they get paid wether they actually do it or not. Well, they never came and cut out cable. This is with Cox though. We have roku boxes in all the bedrooms and the living room. We do have netflix, and I know how to find any show or movie online. So I just hook my laptop up to the tv and enjoy. My brother gave me his login info, so I still get espn3. I have found that doing this will even get your kids to watch less tv. I will never go back.

You can watch all those shows online and if you have someone's login, you can get Fx and Fxx to watch online. All you need to do is hook a computer or laptop to your tv. It is very easy.

I am to the point that I only turn on cable during football season.

Yeah, but then its more of a pain in the arse. If I want to watch tv in the living room, I have to take the laptop from the bedroom, boot it up, etc...
When I think about it that way and the time/effort spent, that may be worth just paying. Because I am back and forth non-stop.

not everybody has someone that is willing to do this for them however. cutting the cord if you just like tv and movies is pretty easy, if sports is your thing its a lot harder, thats why i won't do it.

I cut the cord in 2009, and the only problem is watching ESPN. I had a friends login for espn3 and that worked great, but they got dish. I need to find another friend to let me do it, but will wait until football season.
The way I did the math, I was paying about $1200 a year to watch 5-7 football games depending on the schedule. $200 a game is pretty steep, plus I watched a lot of crap.
There is a legal way to get espn CFB (not nfl tho), you can buy an ESPN3 pass in europe and use a VPN (or other method) to hide your IP address. And then buy it. I did this in 2009, and it was ~$30 for a month. Not all the games were streamed though.

That is only for the things you can't get with netflix and things like that. As far as switching rooms with a laptop, it takes at most 5 minutes. It isn't like it is hard and time consuming. If that is a problem, then you are a lazy person.

I cut digital cable with Comcast a couple months ago. I am still able to get 15+ channels through cable since they never came install a filter & the 10-15 channels you can get with a decent HD antenna compensate well for the amount of TV my wife and I watch.
I have a Geauxzone account to watch many of the LSU baseball games and Apple TV for any other series/movies/etc that I don't mind paying for by the drink.
I use a friends account info to get HBO go and Watch ESPN.
Other than the occasional mindless channel surfing on the weekends, I haven't missed it.

As others have written, I can't do it for the sports. I would then go to more Braves games than I currently do, that's almost $100/pop in the seats I like plus concessions. I really try to limit drinking and driving, and would really get tired of going to loud sports bars to watch college/pro football, lot to be said cooking out on the deck and watching football on HD. Being that I travel to about 1/10th of the LSU games I use to attend, that is saving me more than enough to not worry about cable cost, + would still need internet.

We are looking into it now. You can buy a DVR for your ota antenna to save stuff. Just about everything we watch (except sports) is the abc/fox/cbs/nbc. For the last 3-4 years I've just been switching back and forth from cox to eatel for a 1yr special and am getting tired of it. Hell, I'd sign a 5 yr deal if it locked me in for the $100 I'm paying now.
With a soon to be 3 yr old we just don't watch that much. By the time we're all done with our evening routine of dinner/bath/bed the wife and I watch 1 show and go to sleep.

So you're a cheapskate that is just going to leach off of others. Got it.

Wow, you got that from the quote you posted? I thought you would have at least picked that up from the fact that I was/am trying to get rid of cable. But that was probably too much thinking for you.

I cut ties with cable years ago and have never looked back. The amount of time people waste in front of the tv is mind boggling.
As has been said here, sports was the biggest issue, but I don't miss that anymore either. I only watch LSU, Saints, and other random big games now, which I catch at a bar that I would be at anyway for such games.
Cable was useless to me.

Question:
Is it possible to record a show that comes on network television without your regular dvd?
Maybe I used the wrong term. Can I record shows that come through antenna, without a cable dvr?

All these cable cutters that say they save money but use someone else's creds to get hbo and ESPN are worse than welfare users. You are the bastards making my cable bill higher.
