Thursday:

Got into New Orleans around noon and when my buddy got there we walked up to the Magazine area. Only place that seemed to be open for food at that time was Cafe Romas I thought it was very average. Had a chicken parm sandwich and only ate half of it. Me and my buddy joked that we couldn't tell anyone our first meal in NOLA was a crappy Italian place. After lunch we walked up to Avenue Pub. Had a few Parish Pale Ales and hit on some ugly Tulane girls. Cool bar. Was kind of shocked when I was told it was the best beer bar in the city. New Orleans needs to step its beer game up, big time.

Once the rest of our crew got in we went to Jauns Flying Burrito on magazine for a quick dinner. Had the fish tacos, which were very solid. Also had 3 pitchers of margaritas, so that might have distorted my tastes. My only complaint was the margs were really sweet. Had trouble drinking the third through fifth glasses. I managed to muscle them down.

We ended up that night at Vaughns in the bywater. Super cool bar. Hung out on the corner and listened to a great band all night. Met the new lead singer of Galactic and watched her dump a bottle of red wine on a dude. Very fun night.

Friday:
Made my first of two visits to Cochon Butcher. All I can say it that it was excellent and lived up to all the hype. Had the cubano and boudin. Second time we went I had the pulled pork. Wow. Great spot.

Friday night for dinner we went to Luke. I loved it. Clapton was in there at the same time as us. We sat next to the kitchen and watched them crank out orders all night. Had the onion tart and the duck two ways. Both were great. Also got into the charcuterie. Was really good.

Went to the Howlin Wolf that night. Really cool venue. Will definitely catch another show there.

Saturday: Had a big breakfast at the condo and then didnt eat again till post jazzfest. This is when we hit Cochon again because it was away from the festival and kind of close to our spot. Hit up frenchman that night. Had a blast. Saw June Yamagishi at DBA. Enjoyed the hell out of that area. Definitely my favorite part of town.

Sunday: Had breakfast in again and hit the fest. Had the cochon de lait and the stuffed artichoke at the festival. Both were great. I was amazed at how good the food was in the festival. Way better than the usual hotdog and french fries at other festivals.

Sunday night we went to the rum house on Magazine. Thought it was a cool spot. Long wait for our table, about twice as long as they told us. Had the fish, mole, and jerk chicken tacos to go with a painkiller. Thought it was funny they claim to be the original pain killer. That night we hit Maison on Frenchman. I didnt last long as I was completely done. Got about 4 hours of sleep and headed to the airport the next morning.

I had an absolute blast in New Orleans, and cant wait to get back. Yall are lucky to live in such a great city, but I dont get how any of you are still alive and or employed.

What do the need to step up besides no smoking ?

It's not just the best in the city it's the best in the southeast.

selection

Most bars can only get what's distributed in the state. But A Pub goes beyond that. I have met people there that have driving across the country to go there.

selection

Avenue may not have the most taps, but their selection is constantly rotating and is about as good as it gets in the southeast. They don't fill out a bunch of taps with crappy beers. They fill a respectable number of taps with quality locals and the best stuff they can bring in from around the country/world.

ETA to say that I agree the beer scene still has a long way to go in New Orleans, but Avenue is still high quality.

Avenue is one of the only bars in the entire southeast (may be one of just two or three, someone correct me) that gets a keg for Zwanze day. I'm pretty sure they are doing a good job.

Your trip sounds awesome though. Who is the female lead singer of Galactic? Are you talking about Maggie Koerner?

Kind of telling when an out of towner with no inherent bias says this.

Do they get some great releases that nobody else does? Absolutely. But as an everyday craft beer bar, their selection is all too often underwhelming. Sometimes it can be great, but the times it's just meh outweighs the times it's great.

She was friendly to me

No clue what the dude did to get the wine poured on him, but when he tried to hug her to get some on her she kneed him in the balls.

I was at Vaughan's, and Maggie was well within her rights to pour wine on the guy. Frankly, the dude was lucky to get out of there without getting his arse kicked.
Other than your first meal, you picked some great places. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
