I was at Vaughan's, and Maggie was well within her rights to pour wine on the guy. Frankly, the dude was lucky to get out of there without getting his arse kicked. Other than your first meal, you picked some great places. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

Ya, I I my caught the pour>hug>knee. Dude did seem pretty blotto. Great bar though.

but you only had two things to eat in two days at the fest?

Ya fail for sure on my part. Certain festival things take away your appetite though.

Kind of telling when an out of towner with no inherent bias says this.

Then, I guess it is also kind of telling when a bunch of out-of-towners write one glowing review after another and give it a world-class rating on Beer Advocate.

I'll just have to disagree. Avenue Pub is overrated as frick. It gets its reputation based on a handful of days during the year when they get kick arse super rare beers. There are too many times when the beer list is downright pedestrian though. And that's not to mention the times that they serve beer from plastic cups and dumb down the menu or put a great beer on tap upstairs, then not let anyone up there to drink it.

If it was the best beer bar in the south, it would be a can't miss stop every time you go to New Orleans. But there are a lot of times the selection is too meh to warrant stopping by. Like last weekend.

I'll entertain this idea.

Wait, no.

I've seen it happen, but I wouldn't say it's "too many times." Pretty much the only disappointment I have is when I can't find something that I haven't tried before or the new things aren't in styles I typically care for. The handful of times that's happened, however, I'm always able to find another beer (or four) that I really enjoyed before and give it another go. Or there's the bottle list which is also impressive.

God forbid they not have proper glassware and 40 taps during Mardi Gras.

Do tell. I've literally never had that experience.

I generally agree with you, but this is one thing we don't agree about.

It wasn't last weekend. Nothing on the beer list interested me enough to stop in. Oddly enough, urinetrouble said the same thing.

I didn't know you were a regular.

Go cups are part of the new orleans culture and acceptable for big events like Mardi Gras. Bonus its on the parade route. Great spot to catch the Mardi Gras and its 24/7 365.

Don't you live in BR ? Sure coming to NOLA is a common thing.

How long did you stay ?

Fair enough. I probably shouldn't have said best bar but one of the best. Wasn't trying to derail trey's thread. To not say its in the conversation of best is crazy though.

I'm no big fan of The Cove in BR either, but their beer menu is just as impressive, if not better right now. Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong.

The Cove beer menu

The Avenue Pub beer menu

But...but...

So the Cove (which is awesome) and Avenue both fail to meet your lofty standards. I'm curious what standards you have. Is Toronado too pedestrian for you as well? You just sound insufferable in general.

The owner is a greedy a-hole, which is my biggest problem with The Cove.

I've heard as much, but I've never had any occasion to interact with him. The employees there are always more than generous.

Ok, I guess all those people from around the country are just committed to the lie.

quote:

It gets its reputation based on a handful of days during the year when they get kick arse super rare beers.

They do a lot more things right than just special events. And I'd say it is more than just a handful of days that they have kick-arse things. Hell, the special stuff she does for ABCW alone is a handful of days. I was checking into what some of the Houston bars have going on for ACBW, because I'm going to be there for a couple days during it, and it doesn't appear like they are anything special at all. What beer bars in the South do ACBW better than AP? I'm curious.

quote:

There are too many times when the beer list is downright pedestrian though

Pedestrian compared to what? I looked at the menu this past weekend and there wasn't anything missing that should have been there. There are times where it isn't greatly different than others place in Nola, but that's usually not the case. I'd compare AP's menu with other beer bars in Nola right now, but I think AP is the only one that actually updates their menu online.

quote:

And that's not to mention the times that they serve beer from plastic cups and dumb down the menu

Mardi Gras on the parade route. I don't blame them. And are plastic cups such a crime? If people are taking them outside, they probably want a plastic cups.

quote:

put a great beer on tap upstairs, then not let anyone up there to drink it

This isn't that common of an issue. Would you prefer them close downstairs during the day instead, like a lot of beer bars, just so that downstairs is never jealous of upstairs?

I don't know if it is THE single best bar in the south. But I've been to enough beer bars around the country and world to know that the place deserves the recognition it gets. And what place is always "can't miss"? When I visited Hay Merchant and Meddlesome Moth, there was no beer on the menu that was "can't miss." I'll appreciate all the little things about the places that were done right. Now, I've seen people on here drinking awesome rare stuff at those places, so I know why they get the rep that they do.

I've had bad experiences there in the past, but that's clouding my judgement. The current employees seem to be much better. Just wish they opened up earlier.
