Yeah - honestly, this is what it looks like. I'll see how it does in the summer and fall.
I need to level the back yard (and probably the front, too), so if it doesn't get better, I'll probably till everything up, level and sod.
I have probably less than a pallet of yard total.

A few years back I had something similar. Guy at the lawn and garden place near my house diagnosed it as an insect problem and gave me some insecticide which worked.
Might want to search insect eating my lawn on the google machine.

You don't need a horticulturist. You need an agronomist, you dummy.

That must be why it took so long to get worthwhile replies.

You have a lawn fungus called brown patch, you need to buy a product called F Stop

Looks like chinch bugs. May have killed it last year and it didn't recover over dormant season. Looks like runners are filling in. Could scrape some of that dead grass up to help but also may invite weeds into that area.

Does it possibly have anything to do with the oil boom post in LA or sink holes perhaps?

It's from fracking fracking.

"dollar spots" is the problem. Take this pic to the hardware store or lawn center, they will give you a fix. Good as new in a few weeks...
