Buying an SUV with 8k cash (ETA: Viewed the vehicle. Got Questions.)

Wife wants an SUV. We are poor. Don't want to take on any payments or debt.
What am I looking at here? Ford dealership just laughed at me.
ETA: Just scoped this out in Plano, TX today. Truthfully, I don't know a great deal about vehicles but it rode well, appeared very clean, and seemed like it was generally well taken care of.
My only concern is this: The car was posted as for sale by owner on craigslist. I saw that it had dealership tags on the back of the car and inquired about them. It is indeed some kind of dealership that is selling this vehicle. For some reason it seemed a little "shady" to me.
I have to admit; I want this to work. I loved the vehicle! The carfax i pulled up on the VIN has this vehicle listed as having 2 owners and never in any serious wrecks or trouble. Well maintained. It is the Eddie Bauer edition but the craigslist ad does not mention that.
So talk to me, does this seem a little too good to be true? Or is this something to jump on? The Eddie Bauer edition blue books for nearly $2000 more than what they are asking... pretty curious.
Again, thanks for helping out an O-T poor.

I'm confused. You want a $8,000 SUV?
I bought new vehicles in the past with no money in my pocket. Literally a letter that says "I will pay you. I make this much money."

Look for a used Honda or Toyota. Mileage will be high, but the have solid reputations.

Try ebay or autotrader to get an idea of your options.

Go get a Honda CR-V. I guarantee you can get a 2005-2007 model for that much.

You can find decent jeep cherokee's for that price.
Dad's bought my little brother a 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo for 6,000 had 92,000 miles. Just check craigslist.

I am going to guess that since you are asking what you can get, you don't know the market or cars very well, BUT if you know what you're looking for you can find deals all the time on older Suburbans/Tahoes/Expeditions etc.
The resale on those just isn't the same on some foreign SUVs and alot of time you can find one, single owner, 10 years old, 150k probably worth $7k but selling for $5K because that's what the market dictates.

i think you should look at the 5k-6k range honestly. Cause either way, you're buying a piece of crap.

Congrats on living within your means, seriously. I'd look for a rav4, crv, pilot, 4runner etc. 8k will buy you plenty of vehicle, despite what the OT wants you to believe, lol.

Crv, Cherokee, or 4runner are going to be your best options. They will be high mileage for $8k though.
