Oh man, just a message board. I could not pretend to know who you are from a single post as you elected to do in discribing the entirety of a belief system around a story in the bible. All in a single sentence no less...

In do not believe in religion. So that should be cleared up.. Rather i choose to have hope that there is more to this life than what is known as our day-to-day.
For me, science doesn't answer everything.. But it does clear up a many great questions.

To get better of course...
Why do you go to the doctor?

I hope for things which I have control over. What I cannot control, I tend not to worry about.
ETA: Excepting, of course, college football. I have no control (except donations), but I damn sure hope a lot!

Because his biological instinct to avoid death is stronger than his socially acquired belief in god.
That isnt a knock on him, it's simply the reality of existence. We are the only lineage of animals with a conscious awareness of our inevitable death, which in so many ways is a curse. Its an evolutionary accident, an unfortunate side effect of our adaptive thinking skills that makes us so successful. In order to cope with our terminal condition, we've come up with endless ways to rationalize it, try and avoid it and ultimately eternally put it off with afterlives.
In the end, nobody loses sleep over the idea that the dog simply ceases to exist when it dies. Why are we so arrogant to believe that we're any different?

quote:Interesting statement. As a Christian, what evidence would you say I'm ignoring?
At that point, we'd be doing the same thing we accuse christians of: Ignoring the evidence

True, but in the end, no one knows.. Even your beliefs are just that.. We could be a giant science project for aliens!

There either is an afterlife, or there isnt. Worrying about it and hoping for it wont change that.

Depends on what type of christian you are.

Based on his sig pic, I assume Jazzy is some type of Orthodox.

It's much easier to part you from your money if you believe that doing so somehow connects you with superiority.
Bottom line - it's always about money.

Christians cant even handle evolution, you really think they'd cope well with aliens who've never heard of Jesus?
Billy Graham believed in ET.

Hope doesn't mean it changes anything..
As a parent, I hope my children never experience some of the harshness of life, yet it's there.....
For example, I always hope LSU wins every game

quote:Sure we can. It's called scuba diving.
Are sharks special? They can breathe underwater, we certainly cant do that.
quote:Again, we can. We invented airplanes.
What about birds? They can fly, we cant.
quote:Well, you got me on that one. We haven't figured out how to photosynthesize our own sugars yet. Doesn't mean we won't be able to do it in the future though.
What about plants? They can make their own sugar from sunlight, air and water.
quote:I disagree. That is what makes us special. No other creature can go into other environments and dominate as we do. We standalone on this planet.
The fact that our neocortex is bigger doesnt make us special, it makes us different.
Can a shark leave the water and dominate the land? No, but we sure as hell dominate the oceans.
Do birds reign supreme in the skies? No. We do.
Our brain makes us elite in comparison to all other creatures on this planet.

We create our own sugars, its called Gluconeogenesis. It occurs in our liver. Just giving you this one.

Come on, Scruffy! You're in med school, you ought to know this.
(I sure as hell didn't)

Well you made a very sweeping generalization, so humor me.
Do you accept evolution? How old do you believe the earth is? Do you believe the OT stories to be literal or more allegorical? Etc.
These are the kinds of things I'd need to know before answering. Some christians believe by ignoring evidentiary claims of science, history, archeology, etc. and some believe either in spite of or in tandem with them.

Christianity and science actually agree on many things. Not sure of point to be made. Better off making your case instead of waiting to find a hole.
