Tailgate at Rice and then drive to Reliant. Problem solved.

It was the same way last year in Dallas. People got out there at 8 am and parked outside the parking lot and set up their tents. When they opened the lots, people parked, and went back to tailgating.

Not to sound like I don't believe you, but please clarify that remark...

Are you saying that folks who brought tents, tables, grills, jambalaya pots, coolers, chairs, etc., actually set-up outside the gates in Arlington and tailgated for X hours, then when gates opened, packed-up and drove to their allotted spots and did it all over again? Seriously?

Or did some have their friends walk these items from point A to B?

Either way, if this is the plan for Reliant 2014, I am OUT!!! Good god, it will probably be 96-F at 4pm in Houston that day!!

I was thinking about something like this - tailgate at Rice (trees, campus instead of a parking lot, etc) and take the rail to Reliant. Avoid parking at Reliant and have a better place to tailgate.

No. At AT&T Stadium, the tailgating spots are all on the exterior of the lots. So everyone just set their stuff up with cars parked in the curb lane. Then when the gates opened, they drove their cars in.

That sounds miserable and in no way sounds worth it. Any bars around there or something? No way would i waste my time lugging my tailgate over to wait until 4pm to get in and start setting up.

Actually that year there were enough of us lined up and we eventually pressured the attendants (or somebody threw him a wad of cash) to open our lot around 9:30 a.m....still a late start but better than the 12 or 1 p.m. rule they had originally.

That's true, they let us in 2-3 hrs before they were supposed to. The cop said it was because we were overtaking the street

Reliant is in a crappy area. Rice U. is far, far nicer.

maybe we can hope to overcrowd the streets with traffic and the police/reliant stadium personnel will be forced to open the gates early to relieve the traffic situation.

As for the schools/stadium/etc. not caring about tailgating, this is completely wrong. The more time we tailgate, the more money we spend locally, which is all the stadium cares about anyway. If we can increase the revenue by buying more food/alcohol, then they will figure out a way to let us in early.

In Dallas (2011) we got in the parking lot by 10 AM and we weren't the 1st

In 2013 we were in the gates by noon

If your expecting lsu game atmosphere you are going to be disappointed. It's one thing that sucks about neutral site games.

This one will be about 120 degrees. In the parking lots and miserable to stand in for hours. Last year in Dallas as soon as the gates opened people lined up to get into the a. Because it sucked. It was as hot as I ever been.

Those that do tailgate will do scaled down versions because of the short time. A lot of people me included will eat at a restaurant, head to game, stand outside for a little bit, and then get Into the ac and just buy overpriced beer inside.

But...I thought they decided to have the game there for the fans? I am very confused.

I absolutely hate this rule. It didn't always used to be this way. Before this rule Reliant was a consensus as one of, if not the, best NFL tailgating experiences.

The 4 hour rule exists because Texans fans are a trashy bunch. I hope they relax the rule for this game.

This is the truth; I live in Houston and I remember when they instituted the rule a couple years ago (rule wasn't always there) because of the fights that happened at the Texans-Cowboys game.

Their reasoning was less time to drink = less chances of drunken brawls.

Actually most of the fighting and trash that appeared were people who were not actually going to the game. All they did was get drunk and fight. They implemented the 4 hour rule to curtail this and said unless you had a ticket to the game, you could not tailgate in the parking lots.

Lots of ideas and replies and tangents here, so as the OP, I'll try to tackle a few...

Tailgating at Rice (and take train to Reliant)
[OP response] This is not a bad idea at all, but really doesn't solve the problem. Perhaps some folks will do this. We've tailgated at Rice at least half a dozen times (3-4 for football, 2-3 for baseball). It is a very nice campus. ISSUES:
1) I don't see this idea realistically being adopted by the hundreds and hundreds of folks who will want to tailgate for Wisconsin-LSU.
2) While tailgating near Rice Stadium has some advantages, it is basically a huge parking lot. There are plenty of nearby trees, but only along the University Blvd, Greenbriar Dr, and Rice Blvd. perimeter. To say this would somehow be "far more pleasant" at 97-Fahrenheit than the parking lot at Reliant at 97-F (under a canopy/tent) is a subjective statement. I might even agree, but not that it would be significantly better (given the additional logistics).
3) Rice is playing at Notre Dame that day at 2:30pm. Rice U. parking lots have gates, but I can't recall if those are open on weekends. I will look into that. Either way, Rice U. is private, and it is unknown if they would allow large bunches of folks to tailgate for hours that day. They are likely minimally-staffed (Rice PD) that day, and not wanting to deal with the hassle.
4) It is a 17 minute walk from the east side of Rice Stadium to the nearest Metro train station (and an 8 minute walk from the train to Reliant), plus a 12-20 minute wait-time between trains). Not that these distances/times are all that significant, but probably worth noting.

Drink in Midtown (and take train to Reliant)
[OP response] Another great idea! Actually, this will be done by hundreds of fans, regardless of the tailgating situation at Reliant. But it doesn't solve the issue for those of us who really want to tailgate. And as a cost-benefit anaylsis, me and five friends each spending $45 at a pub ($270)... I could put a pretty awesome tailgating party together for that amount. For those going the pub route, I highly recommend the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium (705 Main St.) which is actually Downtown, not Midtown. It is very near a train station too.

If you are expecting LSU game atmosphere you're going to be disappointed. It's one thing that sucks about neutral site games.
[OP response] I don't think anyone is expecting to replicate the LSU campus experience on gameday. Or even any SEC campus experience. But I can tell you that my experiences tailgating at the following neutral-site games has been:
a few SEC CGs at Georgia Dome -- pretty fun and very lively atmosphere
UNC-LSU at Georgia Dome -- pretty fun and somewhat lively atmosphere
Oregon-LSU at Cowboys Stadium -- hot as hell, but some really good tailgating; a very fun afternoon
I am hoping to have a fun day at Reliant, and am willing to put a pretty good-sized effort into making that happen. It won't be like being at LSU, but it most certainly won't suck either.

The only gameday atmosphere LSU cares about is if you bought the ticket and are seated at gametime. They couldn't care less if you tailgate 2 hours before the game in the parking lot, 12 hours before the game right outside the gates, or not at all.
[OP response] This is a subjective statement. To say LSU officials care nothing about our tailgating reputation is a matter of opinion. The folks in charge of making and enforcing the rules do have to strike a balance amongst such factors as traffic, safety, litter/waste, against the likelihood that if the rules became too strict, then less folks would attend the games themselves. They must be keenly aware that if they push us too hard, we'll pull away.
