I would steal a sailboat and live on the ocean catching fish and what not. I'd also probably set up some kind of smuggling operation with my sailboat to get rich off the apocalypse.

Would be great fun when the hurricanes swept in with no warning.

My plan is to smuggle coffee, drugs and hookers from South America. I'll get water at my port calls.

Probably just as much fun as fighting the hordes for every scrap of food left on the mainland.

these glorious places not beholden to technology are the places where you find left expectancies under 50 years

Post EMP, it might be even lower in places that are tied to the hip of technology without a backup plan in place though.

we devolve, hopefully only temporarily

technology is amazing. if you want to go back to sub-50 life expectancies, high rates of infant mortality, and more war, then just say so.

No google or YouTube to find out how to build this or preserve that.

Nobody's saying it isn't, but I think the issue at hand is when you're so tied to the hip that you can't function without it, and it's only a act of nature even away from being gone, how would you survive it all? Relatively speaking, we haven't enjoyed technology or electricity very long, even in the very brief time in this country, and yet we absolutely do live in a very violent and unpredictable universe that we are a very small part of. As early as the 1800's we had a solar blast take out the telegraph equipment, crippling it in the process. In the pre micro chip 50's it would have been less of an issue. Even pre 1980's it wouldn't have been so bad due to our vehicles not being so dependent upon computers, but today I have to believe that it would devastate us in ways we can't even imagine.

I'd say that if a solar flare or EMP from a nuke took out our electric grid it may take a decade or so to get back fully operational, and in the meantime many people would starve to death,

10 years?? Maybe if all the electrical engineers are simultaneously assassinated too. Even if you blow up all the transformers I think you can rebuild the most important parts of the electrical infrastructure in a year or 2.

Good idea, and where is the operational manufacturing facility that will replace all of the electric grid in America located at, and what does it run on?

i'd imagine even the totally shitty parts of libera or the congo use electricity

That may be, but the general populace of those areas cant exactly go to the local Winn-Dixie to get meat for that night now can they? They cant go buy bottled water anytime they want from 100 different vendors within a square mile of their home can they? They live a different lifestyle...an entirely much more independent lifestyle than the typical American. If the grid would go down, ALOT of people would starve to death within a month.

As do many in third world countries who aren't tied at the hip to technology I'd say.

Reliance on technology isn't the problem, it's more about reliance on economic efficiencies like Just In Time inventory management, and the economies of scale that get realized by centralizing production of products. Those are economic choices we have made, not technological ones. You hear the old timers talk about the days when everyone did a little home gardening and it was typically done as a way to save money and help make ends meet. I can tell you that I've spent far more on gardening as a hobby than I would have on the retail value of the comparable produce it has yielded. It'd be nice if everyone still had home gardens, but it's just not feasible for economic reasons, not technological ones.

Those electrical transformer manufacturing plants (that would be the key factor in getting the grid back up) obviously run on fairy dust and unicorn breast milk. They wouldnt need any type of petroleum production to run. They will magically spit out transformer after transformer, which will then be transported nationwide by trucks running on iguana piss and not gasoline/diesel.

The paradox is that the third world countries that have no tie to technology wouldn't even know about an EMP blackout. They would just carry on.

Yes but when the billions in aid they get from the US dries up they'll know pretty quick and may be worse off than us here.

There are standby diesel generators all over the place that are not connected to the grid and in a lot of cases stored in basements or surrounded by concrete and therefore would be unaffected by the emp. You people act like an emp would destroy everything having to do with electricity.
