No doubt, that doesn't mean we should be eating gruel flavored like filet though.
If Walmart can deliver a product of equal quality I still won't shop there. I don't avoid Walmart because of their quality.

Money well spent I see.
Not only do you not feel well versed in a subject the Ivy League educated you on; you apparently don't even realize that you killed your own point one sentence after making it.
In a post where you also admit to a bannable offense.
Oh, and if you want to throw out credentials as if they mean anything (and they don't), I am a food scientist working at a company prolific enough that every time you eat out, you are probably eating one of our products.
So I'm "in the industry" as well.

How many times have toxins been mentioned in here?
Posted on 4/21/14 at 6:42 am to yellowfin
I only mentioned it once. They are there, usually just in trace amounts. I just question what we know.
I don't base my life off organic, but have made my entire home garden into organic.

I don't keep up with the organic food situation very much. Does this mean you use no chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides at all?
Posted on 4/21/14 at 6:58 am to Homesick Tiger
For me it is weed control with vinegar and boiling water. As well as old fashioned pulling.
Compost for fertilizer.
No pesticides. Few attacks I have gotten are cured with soapy water or just hand removal.

My wife and I were discussing this yesterday about grass feed vs regular beef. I've had both and can't tell the difference in taste. I'm going to buy some of both and perform a taste test on some grilled patties. I will report back when complete.

I can definitely tell the difference between locally available grass fed beef and regular beef from the market.
There is a pronounced taste difference. Have to say that the grass fed takes some getting used to. Wasn't a fan and I wouldn't serve it to people that have never had it.
Have never had the grass fed stuff that is in the market coolers, never wanted to pay that jacked up price.

You are dumb. Just because he's not the most well educated about it doesn't mean he doesn't know more than 95% of people. You are just an Ivy League hater. Let it flow.

I haven't read the whole thread but am interested to read any research about how organic is a marketing scam or whatever. Would be good to be comforted that my food won't kill me.

"going organic" is nothing more than a status symbol?
For the left-wing, self proclaimed intellectuals, environmentalists, it is. They stand out at Whole Foods.

Okay. Let me spell this one out for you. Americans will eat meat, and lots of it. Let's say you outlaw CAFO proteins as you put it. As a result we need a LOT more land for the same amount of production. This effects the economics of land use both domestic and abroad. This displaces other agricultural crops, including staples such as grains, this causing a rise in prices. Ergo, mass third world starvation. You have to look at the big picture when you consider general rules like that....
Just wrong. You know all that land that's currently producing the inferior feed that goes into CAFO's - we could just let cows graze on that land and return it to pasture. Imagine let, letting ruminants eat grass.
Also, if we were to stop producing meat that is fed with govt subsidized feed (grass instead for ruminants), costs would go up, and consumption would decrease accordingly (along with production needs).
It's not that it's impossible, it's that we won't do it. Too much money tied up in the system.
Of course, you can always opt out and buy from local farmers and actually lay eyes on the meat you choose to eat. It's sure worked well for me.

Also, if WM wants to sell organics, so be it. I still would rather shop at a smaller store like WF, Calandros, etc. The main reason for this is because of who shops at walmart, and the experience that is provided to me. I hate WM not because of the products they sell, but who buys their products, who is around to help me find things, who checks me out, who returns stuff, etc.
However, when I visited Denver, and went to WM in one of the suburbs, I can tell you, that was a VERY different WM experience. I can see why people from other parts of the country wonder why other people hate WM so much.

The problem when this topic comes up are the people that take the extreme view one way or the other.
All food is created equal, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with eating highly processed food. There isn't any evidence that clearly indicates organic food is any better for you in any way. Eating mass produced and mass processed beef is no different than eating grass fed, farm raised beef. Etc, etc.
Or
Organic food is the only way to live, if it isn't certified organic you're eating poison. Monsanto is the devil, and you're going to turn into the Toxic Avenger if you shop at Walmart. Etc, etc.
The truth always lies somewhere in the middle. You can't convince me that all food is the same. There is definitely better quality food out there, and some companies have a higher standard of quality than others. If you are more comfortable eating food labeled as organic, and willing to pay a little extra, then who am I to make fun of you for being conscious about what you put in your body?
Has the whole "organic" label turned into a big marketing scheme? Most likely, but I do buy organic eggs and milk because they seem to last longer. I also try to search out better quality meat. There is no way on gods green earth that you can convince me that all meat is created equal.
Also, I try to support local companies, not only because they are local, but common sense tells you that they tend to be fresher and don't need as many preservatives to ship.

is that why when researchers offer the same wine to people and give 2 prices, the subjects claim the one that is said to be more expensive is the better tasting wine?
I'm not saying that research is wrong, but there is a big difference in food production where factory food has been bred for visual appeal as much, or in many instances more so than taste appeal. I definitely notice a difference in the organic sweet potatoes at WF vs the local but conventional. The difference in flavor is probably due to the difference in variety and not the organic vs. conventional, but even if that is what the difference is, going organic is more likely to give you a variety that provides more flavor IME for items where we typically just shop the class rather than the specific variety like potatoes and tomatoes.
