Going on vacation to Gulf Shores this summer with some friends. Looking the play a round of golf in the a.m., what course should I check out?

This is the correct answer. I also like The Raven & Baytowne at Sandestin as well which is a pretty short drive from there.

Kiva has one sand trap that is like a 15-20 foot pit. it literally has steps to help you climb out.
i put my sand shot about 5 inches from the hole

Kiva was awesome. Way better than Perdido Bay Golf Club

If you guys are weekend hackers with pretty high handicaps, i'd check out the state park course... relatively cheap and open.

I played kiva last August and was extremely disappointed in the conditions. Greens were burned with multiple dead spots and crab grass everywhere.
I have never been disappointed with peninsula. Immaculate condition, and the greens roll the same 1-18. By far my favorite course in the area with craft farms being a distant second. Rock Creek is also very fun near Daphne on the way in.

I played there once several years ago. I remember it being in great shape and really challenging. I'm not 100% sure but I believe it was the first place I'd seen that featured in-cart GPS. At least I'm thinking they had it. This would have been around the early 2000's sometime but I can't recall the exact year.

Peninsula is nice. I also enjoyed my round at Craft Farms. Can't remember which of the courses I played.
And by short, you mean 2 hrs?

Kiva is my favorite. Challenging course, tons of hazards, huge greens.
Peninsula was very nice. Pretty challenging, small turtle shell greens, fresh cold apples on 1 and 10.
State Park was not bad for a quick and inexpensive round. It is what it is, just like any other city course.
I have not played these since 2009 so I do not know the current shape of each course. A few of Kiva's greens were rough (18 was bad), but a few years ago they were supposedly stripping them and starting fresh.

That's why I said "pretty short".
Course my daily commute is about 45 minutes one way so a 2 hour drive (especially to go play golf)is not that long to me.

i'd rank them like this
kiva dunes
peninsula
craft farms
gulf shores golf club
state park
these are the ones i've played

Lost Keys is a great course. They went through a stage where they had alot of grass that was burned up but I played last summer and it was better. Fun course and challenging. My favorite in the area.

And he could always stop for Dinner at Dewey Destin, Crab Island while he's there! Win win
