the posters acting like if you step foot out of the resort you will be murdered and raped,
That's the answer...No where is safe. Everyone is at risk of getting robbed or shot or raped ANYWHERE in the world. New Orleans, Denver, Bozeman Montana, Salina Kansas, Jamaica, Brazil, etc....Crime knows no bounds.
However, if you are aware of your surroundings, know when you feel comfortable or not, and take precautions to be safe, you tend to avoid trouble.

I wonder if there are any stats to back that up...?
I hate the all inclusive resorts. I'm all about finding a place on VRBO and hitting the local spots. But I also avoid the "shady" places as I just don't want to bother with the hassle.
Just go to Costa Rica or Panama if you want a beach vacation.

well yeah, but let's try not to pretend that some places don't have worse crime than others

We went in '09 and I found a tour company called knowjamaica.com Its run by a woman named Marva and her son Javia. They were awesome and I highly recommend. For around $150 we had our own 6-8 hour tour of the island with car and driver to whatever we wanted to see. We went on 2 day trips and Javia drove us once. To answer your question though, we didnt have any type of issues off resort. It was a great vacation.

Born and raised there. Great country, I miss it every day. One love, mon!
A guy that I played rugby with at Georgia was born and raised there was the one that suggested Negril. I'd like to get out and see some stuff but I also know that I need to be careful in some spots. Suggestions?

I worked at the Kaiser mine north of Discovery Bay for a few months. First time I've ever seen a murder victim on the side of the road. I wouldn't recommend venturing out without a trusted local.

Well of course, to imply that would be silly.
But, if one were to follow the advice in the second part of my post, you can eliminate a good portion of the risk in high crime cities.

I agree
but for me, I'd just rather not even bother
maybe when I was younger, but not now

That's a respectable world view. I don't have anything against those who feel that way.
I just know in my personal experiences, that when I traveled to places, like Jamaica and Mexico, and I ventured off the beaten path to the extent of my comfort zone, I enjoyed the experience more than I would have lounging around in a hotel resort all day.

Damn y'all are quick on the draw. Went to take a growler and came back to 19 comments. Staying at Couples Swept Away in Negril and the only place I'm really wanting to go to is Rick's Cafe.
I've been to swept away. You'll be fine going to ricks. Negril is on the opposite end of the island from Kingston, where most of the bad pub comes from.
Y'all will have a great time at csa. Can't wait to go back.

On my last trip I spent 5 nights in Negril. It's a lot of fun but the hustle and bustle gets to be a bit much. If you're on the beach you'll constantly be offered things. There's a difference though in feeling unsafe and feeling annoyed at all the hustlers and I think that's why some would discourage you from going.
I spent the rest of the trip in Treasure Beach, which is a string if fishing villages on the south coast. It's the opposite of Negril, laid back. It's very safe, the locals are warm and friendly and I'd walk anywhere there day or night.
At the very least read a travel book like Lonely Planet or talk to someone that's gone several times and don't listen to someone that went to Sandals once or stopped in Ocho Rios on a cruise and think they've actually seen Jamaica.

Go to Rick's by all means. If someone was afraid to go there they might as well be afraid of going to Disneyworld.

I had the time of my life, found a cab driver who took us anywhere. I told him find me a jerk shack.
Coolest place with Aunt Jemima doing the cooking in a parking lot with a giant bar full of locals.
Along comes some Bob Marly guy selling Boiled crawfish. shite you not..
I bought some crawfish and Aunt Jemima was pissed.
It was then a battle royal between Aunt Jemima and Bob Marley.
I just ordered another Red Strip and enjoyed the show.

And if you're interested in what to do in Negril check out the message boards on Negril.com. Lots of good info from people that live there and people who've visited many times.

spent 2 nights in Negril in one of the hundreds of locally run hotels on the beach. i found everyone to be very friendly and hospitable. took taxis anywhere we needed to go or walked if it looked populated and within walking distance. had my fill of all the cheap red stripe, fresh fruit, jerk chicken, and local dank i could smoke or eat. yes, when we were on the beach, sometimes people would ask you to buy things. oh no omg.

And it's cheap as shite. If you're patient and look around you can a pound of it for about 100 bucks. My group always ends up with way more than we can use and we leave it behind for friends or locals

There is a message board on the couples website that has any and all information you need. It helped me to be prepared for the trip.
