what do you do with the batteries from the solar fields once they have spent their life cycle? How "green" is it really?

With the impending EMP attack on the nations east coast grid which will ultimately strain our grid here in the south, I have been considering installing solar.

1) Panels look like arse on a roof, can they be installed at ground level or a few feet above? If so, pros/cons.

2) How large of an area (s/f or # panels) would be needed. Average kWh used is around 3800.

But seriously, for your average 4 person family in a 2500 sq. ft home, what are we looking at? Upfront/out of pocket total cost, then the bottom line after tax credits...

Ed. I can do with 6 panels what it takes the rest of the solar world 25 panels to do.

Is it true that the construction and manufacturing necessary to make the entire world solar powered would use more oil than we are currently consuming?
