Meh. A team can win the championship without being the best team in the country.

No way. Football is, by far, the hardest. You have so little margin of error to get there. There are many teams eliminated from the BCS NC in week 1 of the regular season. There are bball teams that have won titles with 10 losses.

SPOT ON...........

At this point it's not hard to get to the Final Four.

But it's still almost impossible to win it all unless you are

Duke
UNC
Kansas
Louisville
Kentucky
Florida
Syracuse
UConn
Michigan State

We've reached the point where Kentucky and UConn are called Cinderellas with a straight face.

At least in football an Auburn can pull a NC out of their arse. And nearly a second.

Playing almost every day for seven months? A lot of things can and do go wrong.

It's not like the NBA where it doesn't matter because 60 percent of the league makes the playoffs.

In modern CFB, you likely have to be the best team to win the ship.

In CBB, you don't.

So if being the best is the apex, then CFB is harder to win a ship than CBB.

Of course that is offset by the "5 tough wins games in a row" hurdle that cannot be deviated from or avoided.

But in football you can win it all and then the media tells everyone that USC really won it all.

At least there's no question in basketball

Well since 2000

11 different schools have won ncaab tourney
10 different schools have won bcs
10 different schools have won cws

So it might be the easiest to win.

Couldn't that imply that it is the hardest to win?

If baseball and football had a repeat champion, that means if you are really good you are more likely to win the championship. Meaning, it is easier for the best team to win it all.

But with basketball, there was not a repeat champion. This means even the best team cannot get there more than once. It's more random. Thus it's harder for the true best team to win it.

But really, the question doesn't really make sense. There is a champion in all 3 sports every year. So how is one harder to win than the other? Somebody is going to win. So each sport has a champion 100% of the time.

You can't really compare the sports. Football is hard because you have to be almost perfect for the entire season. 1 loss and you could be out. So you have to dominate.

Baseball has a series of games. You don't have to be perfect. You can drop a game and still be in it. Baseball has more room for error.

Basketball is difficult because it's 1 loss and you are out. And basketball is a more unpredictable game, so the 1 loss and your out format is harsh and the best overall team might not win the tournament.

If you're #1 seed you play crap teams. Sometimes you don't even play top tier team in elite 8 game. Florida played Dayton yesterday.

Now is the real crunch time. If Florida beat 2 legit teams now they win the ship.

But I agree if you're 11 seed it's tough to get there.

It seems you like this trait in basketball so maybe I can convince you that it's bad.

These teams have dozens of games over several months to prove themselves. We get a good idea about who the best teams are...then just throw that away to have a tournament. We give the bad teams (and there are plenty of them) just one more chance to save their season and give the teams that were good all year one more chance to fail.

Another threat pointed out that since 2008 only 25% of the top seeded teams entering the tournament made it to the Final Four. This stat may prove your point but to me it also shows that the tournament is the least effective way to have truly the two best teams play for the championship.

Tl;dr: the post season almost entirely negates the regular season.

I don't know how postseason polls work, but if UK beat UF in the final after losing to them 3 times in the season would they get a split title or do they have to be number 1?

Not sure I'd say that to a Wichita State fan.

Basketball is the toughest, it is lose and you are out. Almost any team can beat any team and you have to turnaround and win another game in a short timeframe. It isn't like football where you have time to prepare.

Was not a dig at Auburn. Was simply stating that their NC Game appearance years literally came out of nowhere. No expectations. I don't remember 2010 completely week-by-week, but NOBODY--not even Auburn fans--took this team seriously until a week before Thanksgiving. And they almost won it all.

That would be the equivalent of the LSU basketball team winning the NC this year.

You never get a team out of left field winning the whole damn thing in at least 25 years.

Even the Kemba Walker UConn team was a top ten team at the beginning of that season. It would be similar if Kentucky won it all this year.

pretty similar at the college level over that timeframe. college football is a little muddier because of the opinion poll format instead of a playoff but the overall similarities are striking. Especially when you add in that there are a lot more basketball teams potentially eligible for the NCAA tourney/championship

Going back to my point--at least three of those are from "left field" teams not expected to do anything that year:

2002 Ohio State
2003 LSU
2010 Auburn

Has anybody not ranked in or near the preseason top ten won the Final Four in that time?

In fact I would contend it's the easiest for big schools but impossible for small schools...all due to the human element. Settle it on the field.

Exactly. Butler doesn't play for and almost win a national championship if basketball had a BCS type system.

Schools like Rice and Fresno State would have a combined zero national championships in baseball if there were a BCS type system in that sport.
