This is Mrs. Nascar (the better half). I'm fixing to plant tomatoes and I need to know what the best kind is to plant. The last couple of years I've planted Big Boys and they've sucked. Let me know what Yall plant.

Better Boys seem to do well here, but there was a local nursery that had their own hybrid here in Ponchatoula. ...the Big Jim was the king of the tomatoes

I plant Better Boys. They have done well the last few years. Mine do better in 18" pots than they do in garden rows.
For taste, you can't beat Cherokee Purple, if you can find them.
The LSU Ag school has a website that lists the best tomatoes for this area.

I never found Better Boy's to do well here (South Central) and have had much better luck with Celebrity and Creole.

Heirlooms taste better but just don't produce enough. Creoles and Super Fantastics work well for me.

I bought some heirloom seeds from an ole' m an out of Mississippi.....he claims the Triple L's will produce up to 80 fruits per plant. Usually planting from a seed you have some that won't sprout. I planted 38 pods......all sprouted.

Those. For high yield and canning, roma's.

I HIGHLY suggest Cherokee Purple... That's all me and my wife plant in our lil garden and its all we can do to keep up. It produces a pretty large tomato that is darker in color. We make salsa every year with it also.

I freaking LOVE Cherokee Purples more than anything. Never tasted a better tomato. I just sprouted some last week from seeds off my plant last year. Can't wait to get them going. They have more flavor than any I've ever put in my mouth. Big arse plant. Big arse tomato. Ugly looking thing but good lord are they good.

My Cherokee purples and chocolates both did well last year. Better boys did well. Beefsteak didn't do squat.

Creoles are the best but they don't do well up here.
Better boys do well
Romas are good for cooking and salsa
Sweet 100's are my go to for snacks.
Eta: how's that 17?

Better boy, creole, super sweet 100, sungold, purple Cherokee, jellybean, Roma and BHN 669. That's what I have in ground. The 669 and jellybean are the only new ones I've added. My Cherokee didn't produce a ton, but like others have said, probably best tasting, I just haven't had a bunch of success with the heirlooms.
