Nothing to lose at that point… With there being no option of playing another inning, there is no reason not to go, as long as the LF didn't have to charge the ball. Make him throw you out at the plate, even at average depth, the odds are with the runner in that scenario.
ETA: To everyone saying he was hosed… That may have been the case, as all I did was listen to the game. But from watching lots of college ball, I don't think its unreasonable to think that the throw could have easily been up the line, or not on target...

Laird should have scored on the hit to first when McMullen grounded into the double play with no outs. Now that was inexcusable on both Laird and Davis.
Dean would have been hosed at home plate the last inning. YOu have to at least give the next guy a shot.

I didn't see it but I know Hannigriff and Rantz were both acting like he should have gone.
If it's anything better than 1 in 3 you have to take your chances.
