Help with new rifle caliber

I'm about to buy myself a new rifle, but I'm torn on the caliber. The gun I'm getting is a T3 Lite Stainless in Left Hand. The scope will be a VX3 4 x 12 x 50mm.
I'm down to 270, 308, or a 270wsm. The purpose of the gun is whitetail exclusively. I've got a 7mm for big game should I need it.
What says the OB?

My wife shoots a .308 and loves it.
I shoot her rifle more often than not as well.
If local white tail...whats wrong with .223, .243, or the classic 30-06?

270WSM I wouldn't own a 308 bolt gun but thats just me.

Can't go wrong with 270 or 308. I have a 308 and its a deer bagging machine. I retired it mostly and now use a 243 (even though it doesn't kill them as dead).

Since you already have 7 mag I say go .308. I really like the ballistics in the .270 wsm but it's so close to the 7mag it's not worth buying it.

i love when people post strong opinions like this with absolutely no explanation
it seems to really help the OP in their decision with absolutely no basis to go on

The standard 270 and 308 are both great whitetail rifles. My 270 has never disappointed.
Since the 7mm is only a little more power than those, you could consider stepping further down to the 260 or a 6.5.

I'm just curious on why you wouldn't own a .308 in a bolt gun? A .270wsm shoots a lot of the same gr. as the 7 mag and is very similar in FPS.

7 mom 08 allows you to potentally buy the same bullets for it and the 7 mag if you reload. 7mm 08 has better ballistics than 308 for common ranges. harder to find round just getting popular
308 is a round that becomes scarce at times but is widely available on most walmart shelves normally and has lots and lots of data on different loads for different situations. 308 is a proven caliber that is a perfect fit for bolt action hunting rifles in N America. I own 2 and everything I have shot has fallen.
I have no experience with the 270 rounds but I know 270 wsm is not as readily available on store shelves and inversely does not disappear in a "gun scare"

Of those 3 options you have us, I would go with the .308. You already have a 7mm, and the .270WSM is basically a ballistic clone of that in a short action. The .270 is awesome with 130grain Barnes TSX (at least ours is).
But, there is just something magical about a 168 grain bullet in .308. Great round.
Btw, excellent choice of rifle/glass combo. Any of the 3 you choose should perform wonderfully out of that rig.

Id get the 308 simply because of all the ammo available, if you reload the options are endless.
Id also throw out the 260 because Tikka makes one in the model you are looking at.

I have the T3 Lite in .270WSM and love it, although BP is right about the availabilty of ammo. The ammo that is available is also pretty pricey.
The reason i got the .270WSM is because I got tired of getting worn out by my .300Mag and the .270WSM ballistics are very close to the .300mag without the extra baggage.

I'd personally pick the .308.
Reasoning is I prefer a shorter action because if lighter weight. Of those that you picked that would through out the .270. Of the .308 and the .270 WSM I'd prefer the .308 simply because of the availability of ammo and the price of the two.

I have a 270WSM A-bolt and love it. As Pop said ammo is pricey, but other than sighting in, I don't shoot it a ton. That said, I would buy the 308. I have always wanted one. LSUCouyon has an old 742 in 308, and I grew up watching him kill a bunch of deer with it. I guess mostly nostalgic reasons for me though.

Tikka doesnt make a short action, they use one action for short/long action calibers and another for magnum calibers.

How do they do that?
There obviously is a difference in cartridge shoulder height. Do they intentionally set the magazine well farther back from the barrel cone on the traditionally short bolt rounds so they don't have to use different length bolts?
That would seem to create unneeded and excessive travel of the round in the chamber in the process of seating it prior to the bolt closing.

They just use a long action and put a block in it for short action calibers.
