Irene's Cuisine-Has Anyone Been Lately?

I found a locked thread on it from November, but only two posts in it. I read Irene's now takes reservations.

I heard they take reservations now too. Irene's is fantastic. Italian is never my first option when dining out with the exception of this place

Not my first choice either, but we'll be there 4 days and one in my party would like some Italian. Taking reservations now makes Irene's more attractive, though I hear you still have to wait sometimes, just not as long.

For a contrarian pt of view, I would suggest Mariza over Irene's. Completely different style, but definitely worth a comparison.

Thanks. I considered Mariza early on, but since Irene's was one the others have wanted to try, but avoided due to wait time, I'm probably going to satisfy theirs and my curiosity and get it off the bucket list. Mariza is on the list for a future visit, though.

Next Italian I eat over that way will be Italian Barrel. I'm dying for a $50 cold cut plate paired with a $60 cheese plate, all imported from Italy. I'd think you'd need two couples or a very near bed to eat all of that. Two bottles of wine later and lights out.
Our last meal at Maximos, finally sat at the grill, was great as well.

While I likewise prefer Marizas, wen to Irene's recently and its very good. They usually have a soft shell crab entree special; if so, its definietly worth ordering.

Haven't been to Irene's lately but I have been to her ex husbands Tommy's a couple times not long ago. I really like his place.

although they never "took reservations" previously you could call and tell them you lived around the corner and they'd have a table for you. my friends have a condo around the corner and did it often. i love that place but haven't been in a while

Irene's is consistently a good meal. You could always make reservations but instead of waiting 2 hours for a table w/o a reservation, you would only wait 45 mins.. But I never mind waiting there bc the drinks are always good and the piano area makes for a nice wait. Just part of the overall meal imo

I love a piano bar and a reasonable wait won't bother me at all. Might bother a few in my group a bit, but not me.
I ate at Tommy's years ago. Probably 2005. I wasn't bowled over. The famous oysters were just okay. I had a crab dish on artichoke bottoms. They assured me the bottoms were fresh artichokes. They were canned and tasted like the can. Never went back. Just wasn't enjoyed by everyone as much as we expected. I liked the atmosphere though. Rest of the food was good but not great.
