Applebee's screws their employees, keeps them in the dark until closing today

So I'm chatting last night with a guy who runs one of the El Paso Mexican Grills and he mentioned out of the blue that El Paso will be taking over the Applebee's on Sherwood Forest in Baton Rouge. I found it odd because their parking lot always seems packed (I enjoy eating next door at Duang Tawan.) I asked when this was going to happen and he mentioned that today (March 13th) would be the day. Pursuing the rumor that I heard, I then gave the Sherwood Applebee's a call and asked the person who answered if what I was told is true. She said that she hadn't heard anything at all about her location closing. This was around 10:30pm the day before.
The fact that I heard it directly from an El Paso owner coupled with the possibility of Applebee's perhaps keeping their employees in the dark until the very end compelled me to try calling again today, on this day they were to close. Something curious happens...all of my attempts to call (225) 291-3600 today are immediately ended/cancelled without a ring.
Because I'm a research nut, I called another Applebee's and they said that they haven't heard anything either.
Anyone have any insight on this? If you're driving by, take a peek and report back. Perhaps someone could try calling the number to see if they can get a call through. I have no idea why the guy who told me this would be bullshitting, nor can I figure out why Applebee's phone isn't working.
I've never eaten there, but I have at El Paso a few times, so I think it would be a great addition to that area.
ETA: Since this post, it's been confirmed that the rumor is true, and that they are indeed closed.

They are replacing it with a super applebees 1 block away.

I just tried to call and it didn't even ring. I passed by earlier and there wasn't anyone in the parking lot.
Seems strange that they would close like that since there were always people in there and considering they have been there for a while. If anything, the rent on the place should have gone down over time, not up.

Hard to compete with Golden Corral a few buildings down

Thanks for the info. If it's true, what a shitty thing for Applebee's to do for not telling their loyal employees. I feel sorry for the girl I spoke with last night who had no idea that she would be unemployed this morning.

It happened to us at fox n hound. The GM didn't even know till he came in to do inventory at 2:30 am.

What's interesting is that in my research, another Applebee's I called today had no clue. The manager I spoke with who said the Sherwood location was still open today was rather curt with me and didn't seem to want to be bothered. Perhaps I'll give it a day or two for her to find out that Sherwood did close, then call her back and tell her that her location is next.

Sounds about right for a national chain. The last thing the corporate legal department wants is disgruntled employees having enough time to steal/vandalize or harass customers.

exactly...
Very little good can come from giving employees a heads up that they are about to be out of a job.
The good employees will immediately find new jobs and the shitty employees will stick around and cause problems.

Yeah I know why it was done this way. They just brought what they could to the New Orleans store.

Well I've never heard of El Paso Mexican Grills but I'd be willing to bet its along the lines of an Applebee's type?

Ahh, shades of Champps in Baton Rouge, where the employees showed up for their shifts and found the front door padlocked with a sign posted telling them that they didn't have jobs and to get off our damned lawn.

is br so small that people actually care about an applebees closing down?

Are you so dense as to not understand this thread is about the way they treated their employees, not about them closing?

That's a lot of work to see if the Applebee's you frequent is closed. Just go to another one in br.

I see this as a reflection of the type of people they employ. The little frickers would screw with patrons in an attempt to get even with the owners.
While it sucks, for the betterment of my business I would keep it quiet.
Think it is right for them to give two weeks pay for these actions.
