Then, just one online course and $280 later (or $200 and eight hours community service)

Regarding the cash grab: In Key West it was show up the next morning and pay a $200 fine OR immediate 8 hours community service. One guy plead guilty and picked community service and then ran away before getting on the bus. Took them like 10 minutes to find that dumbass.

If it were the US, I don't think the chances of the money grab would be so high but when you're down south... LINK Pretty sure she and her family of 7 weren't "dopers" or troublemakers.

quote:

The family's ordeal began last Wednesday when Maldonado and her husband, Gary--both US citizens--were returning from a funeral in Mexico when the bus they were traveling on was stopped at a military checkpoint outside of Hermosillo, Sonora, Klippel said.

Everyone was ordered off the bus and huddled in a small room with an x-ray machine for their luggage, Klippel said.

"After everyone on the bus had been waiting over two hours a soldier approached Gary, took his identification and said 'unfortunately there were drugs found under your seat,'" Klippel wrote in an account on the family's Facebook page.

Maldonado waited for an attorney, according to Klippel, when authorities told him he was free to go and that the drugs were actually found beneath Yanira's bus seat and she was being arrested.

The family said an attorney told them they could bribe the judge, so Maldonado frantically had family wire him $5,000 for the bribe. But he says though the money was offered it was not accepted.

Maldonado was told later that his wife had been transferred to a holding facility in the border town of Nogales, Klippel said.

If a judge rules against Maldonado, Klippel said she could wait in jail for months while police investigate her case.

I don't really see a problem with this, in fact I'm sure most college students there for SB welcome this. get through with it and go on with your partying.

More money for the city and convenient for the SBers. Win-Win

You're of the assumption that all these citations are factual.

I would be willing to bet that 99.99% of the citations are, in fact, factual.

I spent about 8 years in a row down in PCB for spring break, being about 2 hours from it growing up, and the cops would tell you to dump out booze before even thinking about giving a ticket. I have driven nearly black out drunk down there and gone through road blocks, I have carried fifths on the tailgate of a truck I was riding on and the cops just told me to dump it out. Everyone acts like the cops are out on a money grab but if you get a ticket down there, chances are you were being an a-hole somehow.

As for temporary court, they did that years ago to a point. You used to go in front of the judge in groups of offenses and they would have you out cleaning garbage on the street the next day.

Don't care. I've spent many years in PCB and never got arrested or even pulled over. I obeyed the law in public and if I was drinking while under age, I did it in the privacy of my room. I wasn't a doper or a trouble maker. I didn't associate with them either. Only stupid people get into trouble when they're there. Cops are everywhere and if you chose to ignore it then shame on you.

one of the big problems in this county is that so many people believe that if you're arrested or cited for something, that must mean you did something wrong.

and a bigger problem with the country is that people don't think anything is wrong. PCB is big on drinking & driving and open container. That is is their bread and butter citations down there. Open container tickets, in my experience down there, are given to people with open containers being assholes. I had a cop tell me to dump out a jack and coke 3 times before I finally got far enough away from her that she couldn't tell me to dump my 4th. You act like they run around giving tickets to everyone in sight and they don't.

You remind me of a person that complains when you get a speeding ticket though you speed 99% of the time you are driving.

wow

you seem to think that not only are cops essentially infallible but that probable cause to make an arrest or give a citation = reasonable doubt to convict.

and you also have no problem with the state pressuring people to accept a quick conviction without discussing their options with a lawyer.
