I'm beyond ruling anything out at this point but I would think if the plan was that ready to go the terrorists would want that plane back up in the air ASAP.
But I never went to terrorist school so what do I know?

Radar signals recorded by the Malaysian military appear to show the missing airliner climbing to 45,000 feet, above the approved altitude limit for a Boeing 777-200, soon after it disappeared from civilian radar and made a sharp turn to the west, according to a preliminary assessment by a person familiar with the data.

The radar track, which the Malaysian government has not released but says it has provided to the United States and China, then shows the plane descending unevenly to an altitude of 23,000 feet, below normal cruising levels, as it approached the densely populated island of Penang, one of the country’s largest. There, the plane turned from a southwest-bound course, climbed to a higher altitude and flew northwest over the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean.

Investigators have also examined data transmitted from the plane’s Rolls-Royce engines that shows it descending 40,000 feet in the space of a minute, according to a senior American official briefed on the investigation. But investigators do not believe the readings are accurate because the aircraft would likely have taken longer to fall such a distance.
“A lot of stock cannot be put in the altitude data” sent from the engines, one official said. “A lot of this doesn’t make sense.”
Fight in the cockpit?

Rolls Royce officials think the altitude data is wrong.
The plane would have to be in a nosedive to to that in my option...but I'm not an expert

Yeh sending a plane back up in the sky that everyone is looking for would be the last thing a terrorist group would want to do

In that case I would not have soiled myself; I'd probably already be dead of a heart attack.

even in a nose dive, 40,000 feet in a minute seems to be more than terminal velocity.

If it dropped 40,000 ft. in a minute, it didn't come back up.

We know the plane rose in altitude to ~45,000 feet, enough to knock out the passengers on the plane.
payne stewart scenario?

woah...40,000 feet/min = 454 mph
Posted on 3/14/14 at 5:06 pm to JuiceTerry
I don't have any faith in what the Malaysians say

It wouldn't have been "falling" down...it would have been "flying" down.
Bad data.

Until it's found, I don't think there's going to be a point where they're not looking for it and the more (or if) it looks like terrorism, the more finding the plane becomes a world priority.
Combine that with the fact that the Malaysians clearly don't have their shite together and the smart play presumably would have been to get the plane back up and towards the target as fast as they can.
Of course, the even smarter play would have been not to land at all which makes the "the plane is stashed, waiting to be used" theory a little weird.

Here's a theory. The pilots turned the transponder and communications data off before ascending to 45,000 feet. There, they put on their oxygen masks and started a cabin de-pressurization, knocking out the cabin crew as well as the passengers, before making their turn westward.
All of this happened while Malaysia ATC was handing the plane off to Ho Chi Minh ATC.

If I was a terrorist it would be at the pay n' spray
Posted on 3/14/14 at 5:17 pm to Topwater Trout
that drops your wanted level to 0, right?
Posted on 3/14/14 at 5:17 pm to RollTide1987
Wouldn't passenger oxygen masks deploy? Unless the pilot can control that. I'm assuming he didn't turn the oxygen off because of his mask.

The 40000 ft drop is 7.58 miles a minute or 455 mph...the descent would have been close to vertical...I think

I would think going down 40,000 ft in a minute would put a serious strain on the structural mechanics of the aircraft, even more so trying to come out of such a dive.
