What Sports Teams Do You Root For (And Why)?
Posted on 3/3/14 at 1:38 am

Since this is an SEC Message board and some states have no pro teams, I think this could be an interesting thread. I know there are some weird combos, like people that like Bama Football and UK Bball (Homers IMO) and then the Heat bball fan that tries to fit in with the Pelican crowd.
Anyway:
NBA: Portland Trail Blazers. Probably by far my favorite sports team of all teams I follow. Growing up in Portland and being a fan during the BRoy era has got them to grow on me over the years. I will be the first to admit, I am a Blazers homer. I follow this team really closely. I probably watch 90% of their games, even if I have to stream it through a crappy video. There are games I don't even now who's shooting because the quality is so baddddd but I still cheer just as hard.
NFL: Denver Broncos. There is no Portland NFL team, so a few years ago (When Denver had Jay Cutler and Plummer) I picked Denver because my Dad was pretty big Denver fan at the time and he kind of forced them upon me. Yes, I was a fan during the crappy Josh McDaniels era and I actually liked Tebow
I also started liking Denver because of Champ Bailey. I remember seeing his Barbecue commercials when I was younger with him in his Denver jersey. He's probably my favorite sports player.
NCAA FB: Oregon Ducks. I'm not a huge Ducks/college fan just because of the turnover and never having to go to college there (yet.) I became a fan of the Ducks when I was younger because I LOVE the color green. I usually miss a few games due to Fall activities every year which causes me to lose momentum with the team. After the Stanford loss last year, I lost a lot of hope. I really thought we could challenge anyone then. Then losing Jordan, Alonso, Kelly, etc, I felt like this year's team had its holes and was going to lead to another let down. I still thought we'd be good, but it wasn't until we killed Tennessee and played a great game IN Washington I actually thought we were contenders. We all know what happened later in the season.
NCAA MB: Oregon Ducks again. I'm not a NCAA bball fan but I'll watch an Oregon game here and there. We could have the #1 team in the nation and I probably wouldn't have any more interest than I do now. Players come and go so quickly that it's hard to get behind a team and their players. I do however watch March Madness quite a bit.
MLS: Portland Timbers. Before we got the Timbers, I would've told you I would never care for soccer. After getting the Timbers though, I started to learn more about Soccer. I love how crazy the fans get over this. The atmosphere is awesome and the rivalries are fun (For Portland at least.)

NBA: SAN ANTONIO SPURS.
I grew up an Air Force brat, and my family lived in San Antonio more than any other city while I was growing up, including being there for the team's first championship in 1999. David Robinson was my main sports role model, and I have followed the team hardcore for about 20 years (and I'm only 25
). Will always love my Spurs. Been a terrific run of success (yes, I'm still heartbroken over the last Finals, I won't even lie), and I've appreciated every minute of it. #GoSpursGo
NCAA (all sports): TEXAS AGGIES and MICHIGAN WOLVERINES.
My dad graduated from Texas A&M in '83. My mom graduated from Michigan in '83. That explains why I grew up a fan of both schools, I guess. Of course, I also attended (and graduated from) A&M, my wife is an Aggie grad, and one of my little brothers is a senior there now, so I bleed maroon. Knew the words to the Aggie War Hymn before I knew my ABC's, not even kidding
NFL: DALLAS COWBOYS and HOUSTON TEXANS.
America's Team is my #1 (and has been since I was a little kid), but I started following the Texans a few years ago since my wife is from Houston. Really hoping Manziel ends up a Texan, for obvious reasons.
Also, frick Jerry Jones.
NASCAR: JEFF GORDON and JIMMIE JOHNSON.
Been a NASCAR fan since I was 9 or 10. Became a Gordon fan when he was tearing it up in '97, and actually started rooting for Jimmie before he started winning titles. Pull for both the 24 and the 48 weekly.

Anyway:
NBA: Memphis Grizzlies. Same as you they are probably my favorite sports team to follow. I live in Memphis and just love everything about this team. The roster is full of extremely likable players and they play a style of basketball that is hard to dislike. The "Grit Grind" mantra of the team is way I love to see basketball played.

I do this as well way too often

NFL: Tennessee Titans: They are the other local team. When I really started to watch football was when they had Steve McNair and Eddie George. They were awesome back then.
NCAA FB: Alabama Crimson Tide: I never really grew up with any rooting interest in college football. No one really cared about it where I grew up in Kentucky. I didn't really become a fan until we took a trip down to Tuscaloosa for a basketball tournament one summer. I fell in love with the campus and decided it was where I wanted to go to college. I was firmly on the bandwagon when Saban crushed Tennessee (my most hated team) his first year.
NCAA BB: Kentucky basketball was the first team I ever cheered for growing up. It was impossible not to. My mom and both of her parents went to school there. When Kentucky was playing either they would be at our house or we would be at theirs. It was all I really knew sports wise until I was a teenager. Alabama is now number 1 for me, but I will still cheer for Kentucky unless we are playing each other.

College Football - LSU
MLB - Yankees
College Basketball - LSU (but really just love the sport
NFL - Saints
NBA - bandwagon
And that's in order. Don't really care about anything else.

I'm not gonna lie, I had you in mind when I was thinking of starting this thread. You know quite a bit about the teams you like and you don't seem like a bandwagon fan so I was curious as to how you started to like them. Most bandwagon fans can't tell you jack about their teams and when they try to, it's all a bunch of obvious casual sports stuff that everyone knows. You actually know your teams pretty well, I just wanted to take a shot at you

Missouri and the closer to St. Louis the better.

NBA: Pelicans. Grew up in Louisiana so it just works. None of my family likes basketball so I was free to pick my own team.
NFL: Saints. I was born into it.
NCAA: LSU. Again, born into it. Everyone in my fam aside from my mom's parents went to LSU. Grew up 15 miles from campus.
NHL: Calgary Flames. Decided to pick a team when I moved to Montana since this is the great white north and hockey is pretty popular here. Loved the logo, the name, and Jarome Iginla. Also didn't want to be just another Avs or Wild fan.
MLB: Padres. Went to San Diego right around the time I was starting to get interested in baseball. Caught a weekend series against the Dodgers and it was love at first sight.

Most of mine are location based...
Houston Rockets
Houston Astros
Houston Texans
University of Texas
The three that are odd are
LSU Tigers
Vancouver Canucks
California Bears
My mom has a degree from Cal-Berkley and when I left the hospital after being born I left in a Cal Bears jumper. I've never been to a Bears game, but I watch them any time I can and when I can't they're one of the first things I look for in online scores.
My aunt lived in Vancouver for a few years and she took me to my first NHL game back in the Pavel Bure era. That arena was electric when he came over the board. I don't think I've ever felt that level of electricity at a sporting event.
LSU is where my best friend in high school went. I drove out to see him a few times and while people gave me a lot of shite about going to UT, they were still a lot of fun to hang out with. I really enjoyed those weekends and just being on the campus for those times was enough to give me a sweet spot in my heart for it.

College football: LSU
College baseball: LSU
MLB: Cubs (dads college roommate lives in Chicago and Wrigley was my first professional park to go to)
NHL: Blackhawks (same as above but haven't been to a Blackhawks game. He has blue line tickets though.. I don't really follow them just root for them when I see them)
Any other sports LSU is playing

Auburn: Both my parents went to Auburn along with some other family. About to finish my third year at AU. Always loved it. Been going to games since I could walk.
Braves: Grew up watching them. Loved Chipper, Andrew Jones and Bobby Cox. They were the most local team. Went to a bunch of games with my dad.
Lakers: Really started getting into sports when Kobe and Shaq were making their run. Plus I had no other team to root for. Hawks were never on TV so I didn't even know who was on the team. Stuck with the Lakers ever since.
Falcons: Went with the local team again. No other real reason. I barely even consider myself a Falcons fan. I find my self rooting for my Fantasy team harder than I do for the Falcons.

NBA: N.O. Pelicans
I became a Hornets fan back in 1995 when me and my family moved to Charlotte. When we moved back to BR in 1999, the Hornets relocated to NO which made me a die-hard fan.
NCAA (all sports): LSU Tigers/ SU Jags
I was born in BR so I been a fan since I can remember. Shaq started at LSU when I was 7 and quickly became my all-time favorite player in basketball on any level. Also my wife graduated from LSU. I'm a Jags fan as well because I attended back from 2001-2003 but I was a fan before then.
NFL: N.O. Saints
My favorite team since I started watching football in the late 80's because they are the home state team. The Dome Patrol was the sickest defense I've ever watched. Too bad our offense was one of the worst.

MLB - Cards, were always on the local radio station when I was a kid, StL was far away and exotic
NFL - Green Bay, green is favorite color, saw them in kindergarten on TV, otherwise grew up equidistant from Cards, Saints, and Falcons in the 70's so what would you do in that situation?
College sports - GT (alum) and Arkansas (grew up there)
NBA - don't care, used to root for the Bucks when Moncrief was there, grew to like Cummings too
