Darren Aronofsky's 'Noah'

For a brief moment there, it looked like "Noah" was headed into some choppy waters. Reports surfaced last fall that Paramount and director Darren Aronofsky were clashing over the cut of the movie, with the studio concerned that the faith-based audiences they're aiming to bring out to the multiplex weren't responding at test screenings. But the waters have calmed, and with the movie washing ashore next month, Aronofsky's vision has won out.
THR has an extensive piece about the making of the film, and Aronofsky is candid that things didn't always go smoothly, saying quite honestly, "There was a rough patch," and a particularly prickly one. Paramount went ahead "and tested as many as half-a-dozen of its own cuts of the movie," and needless to say, the director was not pleased, saying, "I was upset -- of course. No one's ever done that to me." Moreover, it's a process he's never used and doesn't particularly believe in, especially when audiences are asked to comment on a film that, at the time, didn't have all its visual effects in place, or score and ran too long (it was 2 1/2 hours, the final version is 2 hours and 12 minutes).
"I imagine if I made comedies and horror films, it would be helpful," Aronofsky shares. "In dramas, it's very, very hard to do. I've never been open to it."
But at the end of the day, Paramount's versions of the movie tested no better than Aronofsky's early, rough cuts and ultimately, the studio put faith in the filmmaker and his challenging approach to the material. "They tried what they wanted to try, and eventually they came back," Aronsofsky said. "My version of the film hasn't been tested … It's what we wrote and what was greenlighted." And moreover, he's proud that he kept his indie approach on the blockbuster film.

Love all of Aronosky's films. Don't care if Crowe is starring.
In.

Not sure if I am into this or not.
Will they be having any dinner scenes?

This seems like it should be a good idea, but they'll try too hard to make it "epic" and the result will ultimately be a flop. If I hear good things about it from people I know, I'll check it out though.

Concept as an "epic" movie just seemed kind of ridiculous to me when I saw the previews during the Super Bowl. I didn't know Aronofsky was directing it. Kind of surprising because it just seemed like a cheese fest to me.

From what I understand, its much more of a Fantasy film in a lot of ways than a historical epic.

Sort of, yeah..I agree.
Just hope it's the good kind of cheesy (Gladiator, Troy).

That's it exactly. It's not even really a "retelling." It's based on the Noah story but has a lot of Aronofsky's own interpretations and character in it. For instance, Noah is a bit of a drunk and has a ton of doubts.

That was why the studio went behind his back and did its own edits and test screenings. Came back with the conclusion that it wasn't really quite as bad as they had anticipated and that their edits didn't test much better with the religious zealots than Aranofsky's.
I'm pretty excited about it, frankly. Russell Crowe is a solid actor and I'll be interested to see how Aronofsky handles a big budget. The effects look absolutely amazing, and you know the story will be intricate and thoughtful and there will be shots that take your breath away.

actually, the biblical noah planted a vineyard, and was most definitely a drinking man i thought this was an unusual choice for aronofsky, but i always find his films to be very beautiful, and am looking forward to this one as well.

Yeah, I saw the flaming sword and the wall of fire and knew this movie was going to be completely different from what I was thinking initially.

Good. Hate it when studios get in the way.

Clearly this will be a much bigger scope, but I hope he still zooms in on things. One of my favorite parts of his style is the voyeur element-sometimes uncomfortable to watch, but showing his film's characters in unmercifully honest moments. And even though Crowe is a premier actor, I'm not gonna get my hopes over the moon. Sounds like DA got caught in the machine with production.

It's getting mostly good reviews so far, despite the religious uproar.

Wait, people will go see this seeking "facts" about a biblical story? That's real life? That's going to happen? Come on, human race.
