Wife and I want to take the kids down to the Aquarium and insect deal in a few weeks. The boys are 4 and 2.

Looking for something that may be local, good food, but an environment that is easy to manage kids in...not Chuckie Cheese type stuff, or even kiddie, just relaxed and good local grub. Would love it within walking distance but not required

Palace Cafe right there is good with kids and it's two blocks from the Insectarium.
American Sector would probably be a good choice, but it's a little further.

Camelia Grill (the Grill) may be a good choice as it's simple food.

I recently went to the aquarium for the first time in a while. I wouldn't plan to spend a significant amount of time there - we went slow and probably stayed there for an hour...

We did the Aquarium /Insect deal this summer with our two rug rats. Took them to Dragos, Elizabeths, Cafe Du monde, and *gasp* Bubba Gumps. The latter being their and my niece the babysitters choice the night me and the bride went to August. All were kid friendly. The boy especially got a kick out of all the hungover/stoned wookies and hipsters stumbling into Elizabeth's at 11am.

Have had plenty of luck at Stanley, Domenica, and most recently (not walking distance) Ancora.

Not within walking distance, but Mandina's is a good choice with kids. Huge menu and very casual. I like the food very much though there are some detractors. Otis will support me on this. It's a great neighborhood joint. It would be easy to get to as you can take the Canal St. streetcar to get there right where you are hanging out and a streetcar ride would be fun for the kids. Makes the meal a memorable occasion in my opinion. You can make a reservation there or just go early or later for your meal when it's not as crowded.

If they'll let them in, Barcadia. They can split a bigass burger, you can get one too, and ya'll can play some awesome old arcade games.
