GOPProud founder dumps his party

Jimmy LaSalvia founded GOPProud which is a gay organization the the Republican Party. That's like starting a Saban Fan Club at LSU. Why be where you're hated?

A new Gallup poll came out last week showing that a record number of Americans, 42%, reject both major political parties and identify as independent. Republicans are at a historic low of only 27%.
I’ve said for a long time that both John McCain and Mitt Romney won independents, but lost the election, because most independents used to be Republicans. They were Republicans, but now they are too embarrassed to formally affiliate with a party that’s lost its way.
Today, I joined the ranks of unaffiliated voters. I am every bit as conservative as I’ve always been, but I just can’t bring myself to carry the Republican label any longer. You see, I just don’t agree with the big-government ‘conservatives’ who run the party now.
The other reason I am leaving is the tolerance of bigotry in the GOP. The current leadership lacks the courage to stand up to it – I’m not sure they ever will.
I have worked hard to help to create an atmosphere on the right where conservatives can openly support gay Americans and even support same-sex marriage. In that effort, we have won, but there is more work to do to root out the anti-gay and other forms of bigotry in the party.
So I changed my voter registration today – “No Party.”
Things are changing, and I’ve been writing a lot about a recalibration that is happening in the political sphere these days. I’ll share my thoughts on the changing political landscape over the coming months and year on this site, and in a book I hope to complete this year.
So, now I feel huge sense of freedom. I am an independent conservative. (That sounds much better than ‘gay Republican.’)

Welcome aboard brother. Prepare yourself, as you well know these guys will label you a liberal, a socialist and ever other label that will paint you as anything other then what you are. An American who is tired of the same old shite from our party.
I frankly think the ground swell has long begun where the intolerant on the right is being pushed out. I have said countless times to reclaim the GOP we have to burn it down completely. And that fire has started.
Let me know when you finish your book. I will happily buy it.

If his fight is solely against big gov't establishment republicans who are no better than the democrats and social conservatives who oppose gay marriage, are pro WOD, wants religion involved in public policy, then I'll support him.

While I agree that a lot of true Independents lean conservative (especially on fiscal matters), the GOP lost 2008 and 2012 due to losing the Hispanic support Bush had in 2000 and 2004.

The bad news it the GOP is losing every stripe of voter because none of the "leadership" stands on ANY principal.
Reagan won the way he won as much due to social conservatives as fiscal conservatives - he spoke to both equally. Bush 41 rode Reagan's coattails into office.
Bush 43 won because he very actively courted the social conservatives (especially pro-life voters). Most people who are pro-life are also pro-traditional marriage.
The current inside the beltway GOP mindset seems to be taking the social conservative (especially pro-life) for granted.
So by playing the middle the GOP loses on all fronts and will never, ever, win another national election without the pro-life vote being energized and active.

What one person sees as tolerance of bigotry is actually people not seeing it as an issue and essentially not giving a shite. Besides TD PT and the forced fed media, how often does gay marriage enter into a normal person's life? Zero.

What's the premise of the book? That the US electorate is becoming increasingly in favor of bigger government, more gov't services and entitlements?

Even if you accept the false premise that everybody who identifies with Republicans "hates" gays (forgive a Democrat...absolutism is how they operate), you trample upon the concept of working for positive change even when it is not easy.
Of course, the Democratic Party just wants every minority to get in line lock-step with the whole party platform no matter what it seeks on all topics in order to get their main concern addressed (ie. a homosexual cannot be a fiscal conservative and should not fight for gay rights within the Republican Party).
