Is synthetic oil a waste?

A lot of mechanics will say that synthetic oil is just a waste of money and that unless your car's engine is specifically designed as a race car's engine, that it is useless. Mechanics argue that when your car gets up in mileage, you'd want a thicker oil (regular 5w30) than a thinner, synthetic oil.
What do y'all think?

My mechanic told me the same thing

Mechanics also tell you to change your oil every 3k miles. frick that noise, you can go a minimum of 5k. I use synthetic and I go about 8k between oil changes on a vehicle with 130k on it; all highway though.

Pretty much this.

I don't know if synthetic oil protects engine better but they do last longer than dino oil. I use it for longer oil change interval purposes.

This!!!!
I've been using Amsoil for about 8 yrs; I change my oil ONCE a year and filter every 7,500 miles AND I get a better product.
When I was considering changing from regular to synthetic I did a lot of research and finally had it explained to me that made sense.
Molecules in regular oil are like a handful of change; quarters, dimes, pennies, etc. Synthetic oil is perfect so every molecule is like a dime or a quarter or penny, etc. Make sense?

Synthetic oil is awesome. A lot of mechanics suck.

This.
DIY for $25-$35 or go to an oil change place and get changed for $50-$75.

This is the correct usage of it, IMO.
If you want to go for longer intervals b/t oil changes, use synthetic. If not, use regular.
I've always used non-synthetic simply b/c I enjoy changing the oil in my car and did it ever 3-4k miles. Was it necessary to change it that often? No. But it's what I did.
The motor lasted great up to 200k miles, when I replaced it w/ a new/bigger engine, but it worked great until the day I swapped it out.

Screw that shite. 5k-6k change interval on $19 oil change with tire rotation included. Yes my mechanic said that the 3k rule is horseshite unless you race or drive like a maniac.

i get $19 oil change specials in the mail from the local toyota dealer here like every other month.

The fully synthetic I buy says SAE 5W30 on it.

i just go by what the owner manual. mine say to use synthetic. But I've found synthetic to be pricier than regular at oil change places. Funny how that works.

I'm undecided so I use Semi Synthetic Blend

My mechanic told me the opposite while raping me for a $95 oil change. Less time between oil changes - this one I had on Saturday will last 7-8k miles.

Just do the math on how many miles you drive and how much it would cost to use synthetic. You really want to select a synthetic with the longest interval; I use Amsoil & I can go 25,000 miles or 1 year. Others you can go 15 or 18,000 miles. You can save yourself money & time.

Horse poo.
Royal purple synthetic FTW. Change every 10k miles. New oil filter every 5k. Use RP for my transfer case and front/rear diffs as well. Every 50k
I only put about 12 to 15k miles my vehicle a year so I only spend about $120 on oil changes yearly.

I use synthetic, but I rev the frick out of my engine. I always go above 6k rpm. Anyway I'm reducing the interval from 15k miles to around 8k.
