Could be, but this was unreal when AB was in his prime. Hell, when AB and JV were both clicking it was ridiculous- I'll never forget South Carolina '03. Addai was basically fighting for a 3rd string position

I think most of this thread is discussing running back tandems, not backfields. To me that term applies to two (or three) running backs and a QB that were usually in the game at the same time.
I think the '57 "backfield" of Rabb (QB), Cannon (TB), & Taylor (FB) is hands down the best all-time.
Next would be the '05 backfield of Jamarcus (QB), Addai (TB), and Hester (FB) - Although Hester had a better year (at FB) in '06; same with Jamarcus at QB. It was TB by committee in '06.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the '97 backfield of Herb Tyler (QB), Faulk (TB), and Tommy Banks (FB) because I loved Tommy Banks at FB.
Isn't it funny how to me, judging the backfield on "greatness" depends on the FB. We've had numerous great QB's & TB's, but very few great FB's. When they come along they are fun to watch!
If you are discussing Running Back tandems, I'd go with Dalton Hilliard and Garry James.

Has anyone pointed out that Hill is not officially coming back and Fournette has not signed an LOI?

Could Hill/Fournette be better than Cannon/Taylor? Yes they could be, but unless either Hill or Fournette wins the Heisman, I would say no.
And if you include an entire backfield, don't forget the '69 team, Mike Hillman QB, Eddie Ray FB, Tommy Casanova RB, Andy Hamilton WR. (although Casanova's use on offense was limited). As a unit this offense was not matched until the 2003 team imo.

Can't really compare them, since the game is so different now. Their yards/game and yards/carry were much lower than what one generally sees now.

No love shown for Jerry Stovall? Danny LeBlanc? Joe Labruzzo?
All from "back in the day'. Probably before many posters were born.

I think (but I'm not sure) that Harvey Williams and Sammy Martin overlapped in their time here.
Hilliard/James last season was 85. Harvey was a true freshman in 86. Martin was a jr in 86.

Buuut, maybe!
Although they probably won't.
But they might!

If it includes the QB then the '57 backfield is right up there. I'd also include the '87 backfield of Hodson, Williams, Martin and Fuller. The '01 backfield of Davey, Toefield and Davis (with Mauck as backup QB) was pretty good too.

Cannon and Taylor were two of the best rb's ever. One was a heisman trophy winner and the other was on the packers in the 60's. Has quite a few rings. Hard to beat those two.
