How about Miles to LSU. Althought Ok. State wasn't nearly the program they are today.

Saban to LSU would be a good one as well. Michigan State has a long history. Majors moving from Pitt to Tennessee the year after winning the NC would be up there too.

It was Army, and this is probably the best answer.

All this talk about teams such as texas not being able to pull a big name. It just doesn't happen that often, if ever. In the last 10-20 years, what is the best football school to have a coach leave for a better job?

This is exactly why I thought Texas would make a solid, yet underwhelming hire.

CFB coaches do not jump from one big program to another. It just doesnt happen. The big "splash" hires as of late have all been about timing.

Saban back to CFB from the NFL
Spurrier the same
Meyer to OSU after taking a health leave ( )

Rick Neuheisel going from CU to UW. Before you laugh, CU was pretty good back then

I remember this being a big deal at the time. I think UDub made him one of the few coaches making over $1 mil a year back then.

If he didn't take the years off in between, this would be the biggest, hands down.

Trent Johnson left a football school for a better (safer) job.

Houston Nutt from Arkansas to Ole Miss. I know he resigned, but he would not have done so without the Ole Miss job in his pocket.

An argument can also be made for Chris Peterson. Boise State doesn't have the history of UW, but Peterson left a school that is one of the Top 10 programs since 2006 without a doubt.

Wallace Wade won three national titles at Bama, then left for Duke

From Wade's Wiki page:

quote:

Following his third national championship, Wade shocked the college football world by moving to Duke University, which had less of a football tradition than Alabama. Though Wade refused to answer questions regarding his decision to leave Alabama for Duke until late in his life, he eventually told a sports historian he believed his philosophy regarding sports and athletics fit perfectly with the philosophy of the Duke administration and that he felt being at a private institution would allow him greater freedom.

Interesting too that he coached both fball and baseball at the same time
