True but that doesn't matter if we can't free up cash to sign anyone else. I like Sproles but he is no longer worth the cash he is being paid, imo. He is getting older and is going to cost us more money each year as he declines in production. The time is now to replace him. He was a great player for us but we won a Super Bowl without him and we can do it again.
You're crazy. Sproles contract is not that bad compared to a lot of other players on this roster and he's still a great player in this offense.

If I'm reading this right: We can cut Will Smith, Jabari Greer, Lance Moore, D. Sproles, Harper, and Robinson and save around $36 million against the cap (somebody correct me if I'm wrong).
Not going to be popular, but we can save another $14 million by cutting Bunkley and Colston.
That would be $50 million. I say cut them. We need to get younger. Khiry can play the Sproles role in the event we cant draft someone like the kid from Oregon. Colston is on the wrong side of 30. I realize cutting Colston and Moore would not be popular, but then sign we can Jimmy to a new deal.
I'm no cap expert, but to me its frustrating watching our WRs that get 0 separation. There's no speed there...and $13 million for 2 WRs that are aging and don't have top end speed? No thanks.
If somebody is a cap expert and I'm wrong on these numbers, please correct me...
What could we do with $50 mill in cap space? I would think a lot.

Cutting Colson saves nothing. Cutting Lance would free up about 2.5 million. I don't think you will see the WR core get a make over next year.
Will Smith is gone for sure, 11.5 million reasons why. Greer could be cut if he can't perform after the injury that would save around 3 million. Malcolm will likely be gone so that is another 1.5 million or so. Past that there are no obvious cuts that would save enough money for it to make a whole lot of financial sense, so expect some deals to be restructured, especially Brees.

That's incorrect about Colston and Bunkley. Colston actually costs $1.8 mil against the cap if cut(thus losing cap space). Bunkley saves about $1.2 mil if cut but we then have a huge chunk of dead money.
In theory you only cut a player if they save you at least $2 mil but you also take the dead money number into account.
For a guy like Bunkley a restructure makes way more sense because you can save more on the cap that way than cutting him.
For someone like Sproles he saves more cutting him than restructuring unless he takes a huge pay cut.
I had a thread that basically looked at each guy and the possibility of them staying, getting cut, restructuring, or whether they would be resigned or not. I'll have to look for it.

Don't forget, Jordan is in a contract year next season too.
Jordan has a 5th year team option that costs about 75% of the cost of the franchise tag. The team will certainly pick it up.

He's not even close. Sproles can be used to create mismatches. I think he's worth the $3.5m it would save to cut him. I can guarantee that he'll get that much elsewhere, so asking for him to take a paycut won't work.

Don't feel like going through and adding the numbers up, but I'd be shocked if it were that much. They can save a good bit by designating two of them as post June 1st cuts/cut the others after June 1st and push the signing bonus accelerations into next season, but that really leaves us in a mess for 2015.

Jenkins is actually not under contract next year and the $1.6 mil was incentive money from what I understand he didn't earn and thus won't be on the cap next year.

It's actually only $23.5ish mil.

Why are people comparing Khiry to Sproles? Do you not realize how stupid that sounds?
Khiry is nothing like Sproles, at all.

Thomas is the most likely RB to be cut if we cut a RB IMO.
People don't want to hear that, but when you look at recent production...

What his ypc? Still almost 4 which is decent and he is way more important in the passing game because he is by far the best blocking and screen back we have.
And if you look at the snap counts Thomas was in there more than any other back by a good bit.
Sproles' role actually decreased more as the season wore on because of our poor line play and the need to have PT in there to help block.

i was going with preventing him from getting hit much more as well as the poor blocking. he sustained 2(?) concussions this year right, and a few other injuries. you don't want to lose him before playoffs for sure.

cutting:
smith (11.55m) - bye big fella.
harper (2.18m) - I'd go for it if we draft another safety. he was gone for a good bit of this season and we performed extremely well. vaccaro made him replaceable
greer (3.175m) - that injury looked devastating and he's getting old. he was still a very good #2, but if he can't come back there's no point to keep him
moore (2.531m) - production vs. cost, it isn't there. you're paying him 5mil next year to give you 400-500 ypg. Is it worth it? Some of the bigger games against physical DBs he disappeared.
sproles (3.5m) - 4.25m cap hit, saves you 3.5m. This looks like a restructure unless we plan on drafting de'anthony thomas or someone to replace him. He's getting old, but he still produces and he's shifty
thomas (2.9m) - cap hit is 2.9m, so you save that much. he's still our best back, but if ingram goes lights out in the playoff(s), we could be saying goodbye.
prob (950k) - if he comes back well from injury, he's a solid #3 and a decent #2 DB. costs 2.4mil, and the savings doesn't do much for us.
Total: 26.786mil

Oh man, I missed this gem. Utter nonsense. Obviously Sproles has declined as a return man but he's still a great talent to have in the backfield.

This might be the dumbest thing I've read on this board. Can Robinson create mismatches out of the backfield at receiving? They're nothing alike. Sproles is a good runner too when he has a line capable of blocking for him. His numbers are modest compared to a lot of other contracts. If you want to rip someone outside the obvious(Harper)...rip Lance Moore. He's way overpaid for his role in this offense. Colston is getting overpaid too. I love the guy and he's a good possession WR but he's starting to show age a little this year.

i don't think so either, it has to be some explosive arse playoff for that to happen. he's cheap @ 2.9m, but the reasoning -IF- and that is a LARGE if ingram played extremely well we could be. chances are less than 1%.
