re: NBA Considering Changing Draft Format

Such a fricking terrible idea. Large market teams would be able to dominate with their ability to bring in free agents. Small market teams would be fricked without the ability to build through the draft.
Consider how OKC and Miami were built, except what OKC did would be virtually impossible.

Miami is the 17th team in term of market size.
They're always high in profits, and thats whats important

Market size is silly to bring up when discussing Miami. They are able to attract free agents because of where they are located.

Again, if you're in a small market, and you don't have the resources to improve your team, you probably shouldn't have a team. But that's not the case. The smallest market teams do just fine. Better than the largest market teams, in fact.
largely because they were able to hit big in drafts with excellent players. Any small market team who has done anything whatsoever in regards to winning a title or legitimately competing for one has done it through the draft.

It's both in some instances. As a result of being bad and having no shot, they tank to get a better shot at a higher pick.
There's a reason its the same group of teams year after year who are terrible. Its Its not bad luck
Call it tanking, or whatever, but I don't see how the league legislates Orlando scrounge together some garbage pieces to compete sooner, after Dwight forced them to blow their team up.

They are actually building a pretty decent roster in Charlotte right now

The Clippers have gotten more high picks than anyone in the lottery era. It's amounted to nothing.

You mean the massive sample size you used to frame your faulty argument?
quote:
Top 5 market teams (NY/BRO/LA/LA/CHI), 2006-2013: .500
Bottom 5 markets (NO/MEM/SA/OKC/MIL), 2006-2013: .509
Top 5 market teams in today's standings: 62-75
Bottom 5 market teams in today's standings: 71-61

That's a sample size of over 5000 games and a time frame that is longer than the average NBA career.

They've only been high in profits in the 3 seasons since Lebron came over.

Also a lot of those "bottom" markrt teams are the only pro sport within the city. Thats why NO, Denver, Philly dont have as much fan support as SAS, Por, Mem

Let's just say for the sake of discussion this new draft format is implemented, which effectively eliminates the need to tank. Clearly revamping the entire process will require significant changes to the CBA to increase the level of flexibility under the cap with more exceptions/amnesty clauses/etc...because if you are only going to give teams a top-6 pick once every five years, you need to give them more opportunities to sign/trade/acquire players.
I am the decision-maker for a struggling NBA franchise. Now, instead of tanking for higher draft position I am shedding contracts to better position myself to acquire players. In the end, "solving" a "problem" only creates a newer, different problem because under either scenario the team isn't interested in competing in a given year, only positioning themselves for the future. I'm gutting my roster either way.

Hell some teams do this already

Exactly...solving the draft "problem" doesn't eliminate teams who aren't competing at present in order to better position themselves for the future.

Or imagine the Greg Oden scenario with this proposed format. Portland would have been screwed.

Losing games on purpose is terrible. Fans have decided that they will pay to watch you, and you don't even compete to win the game.

That's exactly what "tanking" is...fielding a roster that is not competitive.

Players are not "losing games on purpose".
