If Alabama football coach Nick Saban is coming to Texas, then school president Bill Powers has a lot of homework to do.

During a previously scheduled editorial board session with the Austin American-Statesman on Thursday, Powers elaborated on growing speculation about Saban as well as current coach Mack Brown. “I’ve never met Nick Saban,” Powers told the newspaper. “I’ve never talked to Nick Saban. We have not hired Nick Saban.”

Powers’ comments came as Texas is eyeing at least a share of the Big 12 championship if it can beat Baylor in Waco. Brown’s job security or lack thereof has been a constant traveling companion since a 1-2 start to the season.

“Mack’s our coach,” Powers said, “and I can say flatly that the rumors we have hired or come to an agreement with Nick Saban or even talked to him are false.”

I keep going back to these comments which were from last week.

quote:

Recent media reports have suggested Saban may be interested in coaching at Texas if that job comes available. Some reports said Terry Saban had been house hunting in Austin. Asked if these reports were accurate, Terry Saban called them "rumors with absolutely no foundation."

"We're staying," she said. "We're not going anywhere."

"We are trying to educate ourselves, to change ourselves," Terry said. "We can't change expectations or change lack of appreciation. We have to change our mind-set. We have decided: this is where we are going to end our career."

And yeah yeah I know they lied before. But if they're lying now, why make all of these emphatic statements?

Sexton would still pimp Saban to Texas but it would be more long and drawn out with Saban preparing for the NCG

sure but the problem for Texas is then the story becomes "how could Texas have forced out Mack without already having a new HC in place" and "this delay is killing their recruiting, etc"

did this really happen? Is this really a thing? I have no idea.

neither do I, but we know the Spinoza stuff has been hanging over Saban for quite a while now

Malzahn for Texas? No way that hiring goes over the way they needed it to

It makes as much sense as any other theory on the board.

I think Texas boosters have been pursuing Nick for over a year. Replaced the AD to make it easier to get rid of Brown.

When UT lost early games the same vultures turned up the pressure on Sexton/Saban because they could see the end was near for Mack.

Mack rebounded and firing became out of the question. Boosters now putting the pressure on Mack to resign because of interest from Saban/Sexton.

Sexton working both sides to play each other. Gets UT boosters to buy Saban's debt but they have not authority to offer saban job at UT.

Sexton telling Bama, UT will pay Nick 10mil per year, but Bama does not have to match to keep him but it needs to be close.

Saban makes a good financial decision. Gets rid of liability to willing participants who are capable of holding the investment for an extended period of time.

Saban gets a huge raise from Bama, retires in 5 years. Sexton makes bank, but negotiates raises for AlL of his coaches prior before "the dominoes start falling". At the end of the day nothing changes, but all of Sexton's coaches get more money.

regardless of whether Saban goes to Texas, clearly the power brokers forcing out Dodds and now Brown shows that the balance of power has shifted at Texas. This may not necessarily be a good thing for the next HC.

On another note, if I owned Rick Barnes stock i would be selling that shite as fast as I can

This is one of the main reasons I am not all that worried. Texas is an absolute clusterfrick right now.

Everything is set up perfectly right now at Alabama for Saban.

Does anyone remember what a cluster the coaching hires were at LSU BEFORE Emmert got to LSU. Mostly big donors throwing their weight around wanting THEIR guy. Big time programs need big time leaders IN HOUSE. Letting the "money" pull the strings does not always work out in the end.

The man is 74 years old and his athletic department has been a complete mess for a few years. He really fumbled the conference realignment. Not really a big suprise he got canned.

I think they decided Mack needed to go a long time ago and they knew there would be no easy way to do it unless he had a terrible season.

They don't "need" a slam dunk hiring to go a certain way. Just get the right guy and it will work itself out over the long run. They are Texas, it recruits itself to some extent. Sure it might not go the way they'd prefer but I think they would accept short term setbacks if they land one of their top targets.

I personally think James Franklin would absolutely kill at Texas.

He isn't that big ticket name, but after 1 press conference they would love him.

ehh I guess, but they have been prepping themselves for this moment for quite a while and they have an ESPN network in the background watching what they do

I just dont see how Malzahn is even remotely in the universe for texas. he is a two year HC with a fluke win over a depleted Georgia team that saved his season

If Saban doesnt take the job, i think it will be Mike Tomlin fwiw

Lol at the idea that La or Al or both combined have anywhere near the Oil money that the state of Texas has. And like another poster has already said, a lot if this money has direct ties to UT.
