ive always wondered if you take out Bama and Auburn, who is third fiddle in the state if you live there? who gets the most coverage and is the most popular of the second tier schools in Alabama?
Troy
South Alabama
Alabama State
UAB
North Alabama
my first guess would be Troy but i could see where UAB would get some love because of the big city

UAB
Much has to do with it being in Birmingham, prestigious medical school/hospital system, and basketball represents occasionally...just go ask UNC this year!

where i grew up (near montgomery), it was troy... they've been a solid football program under blakeny. slid back the last couple years, so it might be time for a change.
i'm sure in the Bham metro, it's UAB

1.) UAB - because I'm from Birmingham
2.) South Alabama - I like Mobile, and my cousins go there
3.) Troy - they have about as much success as you can in the Sun Belt, put good players into he NFL, and I've known several people from HS to play for them.
4.) Samford - in Birmingham, lots of AU connections including their HC Pat Sullivan, and I also know players
5.) Birmingham-Southern
I don't give a shite about any other school in this state.

in football?
Troy
UAB
USA
UNA
ASU*
A A&M*
at least in my experience.
Is all really regional but Troy football probably does have the largest sidewalk base of the instate nonSEC schools that I've encountered.
in basketball its uab, big drop-off before USA, and then everyone else.

The coverage here is about how bad they are, and the story from last week about if they should continue with football is just another like that. In Birmingham it is 1A, Alabama, 1B, Auburn, and then the coverage pretty much stops there except for local high school football.
I'm a tad biased having two degrees from Troy, but I do think for a large part of the wiregrass we'd be #3. South has the advantage of the Mobile area, so there is probably more coverage to a larger area of population though.
You don't hear much about Jax State, Samford, etc.

That is sooo true in football.

After moving to Dothan and experiencing the wiregrass I know that's true too.

There's a lot more USA coverage in Mobile than UAB coverage in Birmingham and assuming Troy coverage in Montgomery

Doesn't it kinda depend on where you live? I know USA gets a ton of coverage in Mobile/Baldwin County. I'd assume Troy/UAB get more coverage further North.

Yeah, South doesn't really get much news in Birmingham/Tuscaloosa, just like UAB gets none in Mobile.
But South gets more in Mobile than UAB does in Birmingham, and it isn't close

How far is the nearest Div1 college from Mobile?
I was relaxing in Dauphin Island, and was curious if any one was close enough to catch a game one of the saturdays i was there.

Love Dauphin Island
South Alabama just started football a few years ago, and they play their games in downtown Mobile for now, about 45 minutes from DI
South had a chance to take UT to overtime this year, and they're getting return trips from Navy and Mississippi State among others in the near future
