Good sleeping bag. Down is the best insulation. Also a thick foam pad to get you off the ground. Air mattress makes my back cold. Walmart has 32 degree down bags for $79. Get two, one to get inside and one to put on top.

If you have a nalgene bottle you can put some hot water in it and put inside sleeping bag with you. It will stay hot for a while.

Bring an air mattress. It keeps you off of the cold ground. As long as I have my dog and air mattress I'm warm.

Of course i have awesome cold weather gear, a zero degree bag, and a four season tent which helps.

Yep, I'm a cheap bastard but this is where I spend some money. If you have good cold weather gear, you will not get cold.

OP, tent...yes. If the wind blows or it's precipitating this will be a blessing. You can make do with tarp, etc...but a good tent is lighter and easier to deal with.

I'd recommend one of those anyway, if it's cold. Rolling over and touching that cold nylon sucks. I have something like this that I put in my bags in cooler weather.

Sleeping bag liners will get an extra 10 degrees of warmth out of a sleeping bag. Highly recommend one.

good suggestion. Silk liner is the best and only about 35$ for a good one.

My coldest tent camping adventure...... around 20-25 degrees with 30-40 mph winds with gusts to 50. We were sleeping on a glacier above the clouds so it was cold from every direction.

That's some bad arse shite.

We don't have power or insulation at our camp. When it gets below 30 in the camp it's pretty damn tough sleeping. Move 1/2 inch and you are freezing

Coldest we woke up one morning and it was 24 degrees inside the camp

Yep. I slept in my hammock Sunday night. 38 degrees and was toasty warm. Good gear last a long time and works.

Definitely done that. Tripped a few breakers with space heaters, and woke up with two dogs in between my legs and it being 31 in the camp.

OP, I'd also bring a small camp stove to make some coffee. That warms you up from the inside and keeps you warm for an hour or so.

We have a fairly large propane heater that we use in the morning but don't run it at night because we don't to perish

I camp out every now and then during duck season in Kansas and as others have said, being prepared makes all the difference. Someone mentioned filling a water bottle with warm water. I took a rock that was somewhat close to our fire and put it in my sleeping bag before I went to bed. That extra heat was nice.
