So I got an invite to go duck hunt Friday Saturday and Sunday in the atchafalaya river basin. I'm not the biggest hunter but with shitty fishing weather I'll probably go. My only concern is the temperature. What's the OB stance on camping in 30 degree weather.
PS. I hate cold weather but I can't stand staying at home when there are potential good trips out there

Bundle up, build a fire, etc.

If you are duck hunting you will be up and moving during the coldest part of the day.

With proper equipment, I love it.

Will you be in tents or a bunkhouse/trailer?

Tent. I have buddy with a house boat down there but its filled up this trip. I will bring my generator and a portable heater. Will that actually help any in a tent?

And don't get out of that mummy bag until someone brings you a hot cup of coffee.

A big enough heater will help, but the correct sleeping bag and base layers are more important.

When you've got it all; it's completely comfortable.

What about socks. Insulated socks? 2 pairs of socks? Also, they start to not fit into my boots.... should I get a pair of boots just for wearing 2 pairs of socks?

Are you in Baton Rouge?

You can get a good pair of smart wool socks from backpacker. They work well.

Definitely. Tents hold heat in pretty well. You will still need some ventilation to keep condensation on the walls to a minimum. The ventilation helps if you fart inside the tent too.

I use those heat pads in the bottom of my boots. Also in my pockets to warm my hands up.

After a duck gumbo those vents will be a necessity. I'll go look at the backpacker.

Another tip:

I am warmer in my sleeping bag when I have less clothes on. Supposedly it reflects heat better and keeps you warmer. If you're getting a cheap bag, get one that's rated for under 0°. A higher quality one doesn't need to go that cold

My coldest tent camping adventure...... around 20-25 degrees with 30-40 mph winds with gusts to 50. We were sleeping on a glacier above the clouds so it was cold from every direction.

I strip down to my boxers even if it's really cold. If you have a cheap bag, put a fleece blanket in with with you and it will make worlds of difference too.

Till you climb out that sleeping bag.

my stance is that i dont let the weather get in my way.

Of course i have awesome cold weather gear, a zero degree bag, and a four season tent which helps.
