I too am a recovering soccer hater but mine was mostly because I played other sports, especially baseball, through high school and was mostly ignorant of the sport of soccer. I did watch, and very much enjoy, the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004 and I remember the AC Milan/Juve Champions League Final at Old Trafford but it wasn't until college that I started getting into club and international soccer on a year round basis.
And it might seem strange, but it is the format of the sport as a whole that was fascinating to me. Just how you have your domestic leagues playing a home and home true round robin and then mixed in there, you have the top clubs from each league playing a tournament among themselves (Champions League), oh, and throw in a domestic cup tournament. And even the Euro and World Cup qualifying was fascinating to me, just the fact that there was a lot more than just the final tournament.

Right there with you. Never was a hater as I played the sport but just learning about the sport at the European professional level made me love it more.

I always wondered how more baseball fans don't like soccer. Baseball, like soccer, is absolutely drenched with (real) tradition and history. NFL, NHL, NBA just seem to be 100% about marketing and money. There are only a few teams from those associations that carry that same type of history (e.g. Green Bay, Chicago, Cleveland, etc.). That's what intrigues me about soccer and makes me a casual baseball fan. Baseball is this country's soccer, in a way. I'm proud of baseball for that reason. Its a sport that my great grandfather grew up watching before the turn of the century. Most NFL teams have only been around since the 60's.

I am ashamed to admit that if you look at my early posting history, you will find me in threads bashing soccer and saying it will never be big in the USA. FIFA is what got me over the initial hump, but what kept me is exactly what bags said. I had an easy Grad Assistant job at the time, so I had a lot of free time. I spent hours on Wikipedia just trying to figure out how the hell all of these club competitions worked. Now, whenever I explain them to a soccer hater, they actually think it is kind of cool. As with most unknown things, it's just a matter of getting past that initial avoidance, then you got them.

I find it hard to really hate any sport or claim that one sport is better or harder.
Although it seems like baseball fans are the ones usually claiming that their sport is better or more difficult.

Because they have never played any of the games in the FIFA series. Seriously playing FIFA 10 in college got my whole house into the actual sport. Well that and sports gambling....

This isn't strange at all. I totally agree. There is something magical about tables, tournaments, relegation, and promotion.

There is too much self-serving bullshite in this thread. As someone who cares little about soccer, I can tell you it has nothing to do with the average American's inability to comprehend the "sophistication" of soccer, rather, few in this country grew up watching it or having a rooting interest handed down to them. That's it, period. All the other things non-soccer fans say about soccer to soccer fans is basically just kidding around. Why is hockey not popular in the South? Why is college football more popular in Louisiana than Vermont?

And, I don't lambaste soccer. I'm not a fan and occasionally give my soccer fan friends "the business" but they can give it back and it's all in fun.

That's not me. I'm just trying to explain the dislike/teasing and the subsequent phony rationalization of soccer fans that it's due to some cognitive inferiority of the average American.
Both Baseball and Football were the victims of wary public eyes during their introduction to the culture. Ladies and "true" gentlemen did not venture to a ballpark in the early days of Base Ball. It was said to be the domain of miscreants.
