Don't fret, LSU fans...this run by Alabama will end soon...

And when it does, Alabama will decline. It is a cycle. Here is why:
1. Saban won't be there forever. And his successor will struggle to fill his legendary shoes just like Zook did at Florida, Solich did at Nebraska, etc. If he doesn't leave this year to take the Texas job, he will probably be retiring in the near future.
2. AJ McCarron won't be back. He has been the key to their run. He is the ultimate game manager, and his consistency is the reason they have only lost twice since he has been a starter. The next QB for Bama, regardless of the number of recruiting stars he had coming out of high school, will also have big shoes to fill.
In the 1995 season, after Nebraska blew out undefeated Florida, 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl to win their second straight title, I remember thinking that Nebraska had this dominant program that would never be dethroned. Two years later, Osburne retired, and Nebraska's program has been on a roller coaster ever since...just like Alabama's program was after Bear Bryant retired.
Outside of the last quarter and a half of this past game, LSU has been neck and neck with Alabama...hopefully Les will go back to the drawing board and draw up a plan that beefs up our front 7 on defense, speed up our DB's, and lights a fire under our offensive line. Whether that is a strength and conditioning issue, a work ethic issue or an assistant coach issue, I don't know.
I do know that we went from being 13-1 to 10-3 and now 7-3 through 10 games of this season, with tough games still to come. That's a decline, albeit not as drastic as some chicken littles like to proclaim. But it is a decline and it is critical that Les rights the ship next season.
Question: What do you think are the 2 or 3 major changes that Les needs to make to catch up to Alabama and keep ahead of Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas A&M?

Good stuff, Chicken. I agree with you. Everyone needs to just fricking chill on this board. All in good time.

Chicken has decreed the decline is real.

I can see him being there another 5 years. I do, however, feel sorry for his successor. He will never be able to replicate this run.

- Replace Stud with a competent OL coach that can also recruit.
- Stop the best players in Louisiana from playing for our toughest rival.
- Develop our players better, especially on the defense.
- Appoint someone to manage the clock and call TOs.

1. Just as you mentioned, our front seven on defense has been gashed at times. This must become an emphasis in recruiting.
2. Our offensive line has been poor when playing quality competition. Again, must be addressed in recruiting.
3. I think we need to rethink our defensive backfield, whether than be our DB coach or scheme or players.

Play the best athletes on defense. They might miss an assignment here or there, but they will also make more game changing plays.

The Alabama program was sliding before he retired.
There was some converstion that "the game had passed him by".

While I agree with you, if Saban doesn't go to Texas, he'll be at Bama until he tires, which won't be for another 5-10 years imo

The o-line and d-line are the two key areas. Our back 7 aren't terrible, but they look it when the battle is lost in the trenches.
I'd also like to see Cam Cameron have total control of every offensive decision. He's a hell of a coach, and needs free reign to make calls that Miles disagrees with. He won't always be right, but there's a certain consistency that comes from having the same guy making the calls.

100% agree; the future will never be bad as long as we recruit the way we do.

1st change: New OL coach

Consistent offensive production and consistent OL play are a must. LSU should be a school where they are putting wide receivers and quarterbacks into the NFL consistently.
On the defensive side of the ball we need to develop more depth so that if we have a year like last year where a number of players leave early to go to the NFL, there isn't such a dramatic drop off in terms of talent or production.

Don't bring that up, Chicken. No one here believes that cycles are true.

1. Stop losing top recruits in the State to Alabama. (I don't know how he might do this but it's certainly widening the gap)
2. Get a new offensive line coach. Nothing against Stud, but it's time to make a change.
3. Get faster and more sound fundamentally on defense, especially at the linebacker position.

I predict thoughtful and coherent answers to follow, backed up with facts and logical reasoning.

This was expected due to the mass exodus of star players. I feel like our team is simply meeting expectation in a rebuilding year.

The most obvious is Miles has to have a stellar recruiting class this year. This is absolutely critical for the next 2-4 years.
The other is to keep Cameron and Chavis, especially Cameron. They are Miles' lifeblood.

quote:1. Get a better O-line coach. When was the last time the Oline lived up to expectations. We should overachieve, yet we underachieve there. 2. Les must get far away from playcalling. It won't happen, so we won't improve. Has Cam ever called a toss dive in his lifetime? 3. Get some legitimate lbs.
