Some of you really love to act like that 2004 season was some kind of crap show and horrid team.
9-2 regular season with 2 losses to top 10 teams, and all three losses to #2 and #7 on the road and #8 on a neutral site where the focus wasn't there. Such a horrible season. 2 of the losses came by a combined 2 points.

Art Briles is a hot name and with the right staff could be a great fit.
I think recruiting will fall off, people dont realize how good miles is. Plus he would need to hire an excellent d coordinator to make us even relevant considering baylor ususally doesnt play defense.
Wed basically have to blow the whole staff up. No way any of them stay if miles is fired. Unless he offers wilson the oc job or something. But then again i wouldnt want a coach to be forced to keep anyone on staff. If Alleva doesnt have confidence in the coach assembling his own staff, we made a bad hire.

We could play the game the miles haters love to play. Could have easily loss to troy and ole miss that season.
One of the most talented teams in the country, and here are our coaches. Jimbo Fisher and Will muschamp. So with 3 head coaches that the rant would take over miles, they manage to lose 3 games.
That season we scored a measly 28.7 pts per game. The only other seasons lower than that in the saban miles era was 2002 and 2009. in 2002 we scored 24 pt/game and lost 5 games and easily could have lost 2 more to kentucky and ole miss. Yet saban is god. lol we were lucky to not go 6-7 that season.

Maybe we should just realize that LSU isn't Alabama and that constant elite status isn't what we do?
Or, maybe Saban is a much better coach now than he was then and he needs a competent QB to win, something he didn't have in 2002 or 2004?
Or, maybe the OP is right? I think that options #2 and #3 are correct.

What is LSU during those years?

Talk about cherry picking. 2 times in last season

2004 Final rankings (The year before Miles started)
1 USC (61) 13-0 1525
2 Auburn 13-0 1460
3 Oklahoma 12-1 1366
4 Texas 11-1 1324
5 Utah 12-0 1300
6 Georgia 10-2 1191
7 Louisville 11-1 1166
8 Iowa 10-2 1022
9 California 10-2 937
10 Virginia Tech 10-3 906
11 Miami (FL) 9-3 903
12 Michigan 9-3 802
13 Boise State 11-1 792
14 Florida State 9-3 776
15 Tennessee 10-3 771
16 LSU 9-3 693
17 Texas Tech 8-4 478
18 Wisconsin 9-3 449
19 Ohio State 8-4 430
20 Arizona State 9-3 377
21 Boston College 9-3 245
22 Fresno State 9-3 206
23 Virginia 8-4 157
24 Navy 10-2 129
25 Florida 7-5 101
I would say you are correct. We are at the same level currently as we were when Miles inherited the LSU program. That said, LSU has a dip in record every few years. This isn't uncommon for LSU as a program, regardless of coach.

2012---- hunter is lone tackle
2013---- class is stacked with d linemen, not sure how many saw the field the field this year, but , miles has set himself up for the same situation we have now. 2013 class will give great depth, then all leave at same time, unless there are some like brockers who leave after 2 of actually playing.
some coaches have recruited every position every year. some recruit positions in spots. steady recruiting is what allows schools to reload. no matter the level, if you regularly bring in #1 class then you reload with then hopes of keeping the same talent level, same for for 2-117 ranked classes. when your recruited talent is up and down on the charts it makes it harder.
either way, the young players need experience, one reason so they have it, another so you can see if they are a bust or not. never good to have a junior come in and take over a spot just to find out he isnt what you thought he was.

Who do you want to coach?
LSU fans must accept that Coach Miles is the best that LSU football is capable of doing.
Accept this reality, and, life is better.

Please answer this and I don't think anyone on this board can give a realistic answer that is an improvement. Who do you want to coach?
David Shaw,
Stanford plays physical bone crushing defense, and runs play action offense behind a athletic, massive OL that is gentically bred to absolutely beat the shite out of you every single fricking play of the game.
Did there defense look like it was on its heals one time vs Oregon?
