Was Warren Sapp Really THAT Good?

He's a first ballot Hall of Famer and now they're doing a "Football Life" about him.
But come on. He was a VERY dominant player in his time. But he might have been the third best player of that Buccaneer defense. I would say second, but Barber and Lynch aren't THAT far behind.
Derrick Brooks was the best player on that defense. Period. But he wasn't a big mouth attention whore and he isn't employee of the NFL Network. So he won't be "remembered" the way Sapp is. And that's a shame.

His "rivalry" with Favre garnered him attention. And, let's face it, most sportswriters and broadcasters prefer a good quote more than sterling play.

I feel the Same way about Michael Irvin.
They are both considered all time greats because basically because the media let them tell you how great they were every chance they could.
Textbook propaganda. If you repeat the lie long enough, people start believing it.
And yes, I understand that a "Football Life" about Curley Culp would get 9 viewers. But he was just as good as Sapp in his time.

I couldn't care less about him getting a "Football Life" because it'll probably be good tv. But the people claiming he's in the discussion for best DT ever can gtfo.

Warren Sapp was that good IMO. 1 of the best DTs to play and the best DT to play the last 10 years. 2nd in sacks all time for a DT, behind John Randle. The best 3 tech DT ever.
I think Sapp was really that good. But, the NFL Network coverage and this football life is all propaganda for him. But he was 1 of the best DTs to ever play the game. Not saying hes th best, but hes def in the discussion. You can say what you want to say about him and all, but on the field he was great.
He revolutionized the DT position with Jon Randle. Before them 2, DTs were typically slow, huge guys that took on blockers. He was 1 of the 1st great athletic guys to play DT. He ran a 4.69 40 at the combine. For a DT, thats unheard of.
You can hate him all you want, Im not a fan of him either. Hes a retard. Actually everyone on NFL network embarrasses themselves except Marshall Faulk. And Deion is Deion. Irvin, Sapp, and at times Deion all look and sound stupid. But, Sapp on the field was 1 of the best DTs of all time.

Yes he was that good, for a DT he really dominated inside, for a few years he was unblockable

Dude is acting like we are saying they suck. I think they were very good, even occasionally dominant. But does Sapp get a first ballot if he isn't a bigmouth? I think that's a legitimate question, because basically you're arguing that he is Reggie White good if he is first ballot.
And I can't believe I'm taking the bait, but a Cowboys quarterback with fewer big wins than Danny White doesn't belong in the greatness conversation.

it is a legit question but he was a great, great player and definite hall of famer. really the only question is whether or not he deserved first ballot which imo is not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things.
if he had gotten into the hof unjustly you'd have a bigger gripe.

It is definitely more offensive when a player has to wait because he wasn't media-friendly. For example, I am curious if Marvin Harrison gets in on the first ballot and I think he was every bit as dominant at his position.

Under the Bucs scheme the Tampa 2 required dominant inside presence to allow Brooks the open space to do his thing.
Sapp made that defense go. He was the absolute key to Monte Kiffin's defense. He was the anchor.
From 1995-2003, he averaged nearly 50 solo tackles and 8.5 sacks per 16 games - extraordinary numbers for an interior defensive lineman.

Actually, as much as I hated him as a player, I like Irvin. If you listen to what he actually says (and not how he says it) Irvin usually makes a lot of objective points.

That Dfense had a great roster and to say that Sapp was the key to its success and in the context of telling someone else they don't understand football......well that says a lot about your knowledge base of the game.
