Getting tired of everything Katrina related. It's been 8 years. Super Bowl, Jazz Fest, the hundreds of festivals, so much more to show about the city. Does top chef refer back to 9/11 when they are in NYC? No.

Top Chef New Orleans-Anyone Watching? The New Orleans chefs aren't doing a very good job representing. It's strange. First two shows involved local ingredients. They didn't even get accolades for gumbo. In fact, the Galatoire's chef got criticism. The other chefs made some bizarre things they called gumbo that couldn't have been further from the dish and one of those won. First season I've watched this show.
Finally watched the first two episodes and I have the exact same thoughts. Some strange looking dishes some of the chefs turned out for gumbo. Not sure how that green looking thing won the best gumbo.
Looks like they have a Vietnamese themed show coming up.

Is this the first time watching top chef? A lot of the challenges are about creativity. It's not just about making the best classic gumbo. Plus Chef Chase has a pretty popular green gumbo she makes herself.

We sat next to the producers at the game. Nice people.

Yes it is. Not the first time watching a cooking challenge show though.

I understand that but most of these dishes didn't seem like they captured "anything" about gumbo. Some of the chefs didn't even know what gumbo was or even how to cook it. You would think that them coming to New Orleans they would have done some kind of research.

To tell you the truth, I've never even heard or seen this green gumbo of hers until I saw the show and you said something and I googled it.

Does anyone know of a way to watch without cable? I've seen previous seasons on Netflix, and am able to watch Master Chef streaming online as well, but I'm dying to watch this New Orleans season of TC. Are there any other options out there?

I've made a gumbo Z'erbes quite a few times. Delicious. I've never had Leah Chase's version. She only serves it once a year, I think.
Degas, maybe the website has some of the shows online.

I've eaten gumbo Z'herbes a few times. Delicious. I've only ever made it once. Not so delicious. Big ole fail. Not sure what I did wrong, but I will probably enjoy it again ... made by someone else.

The show is crap. There is enough in reality that is far and away more interesting than faux drama the writers concoct. They assume the audience is stupid. I'm more than certain the history of galatoire's has enough to keep people tuned in week after week.
Screw their contrived notion of gumbo. When will some restaurant have the conviction to tell these idiots to get the frick out. This show makes everyone look like an arse.

The gumbo exercise was a fail.

Agreed. They should do Top Chef Applebee's. The quality is more appropriate.

I loved the recent season of Top Chef Masters, so I'm not giving up on the show yet.

I'm going to keep watching. I'm into it now since the two Nola chefs are still there. Hope it gets better!

can't wait for the Lea Michele guest judge episode

Tonight's show was much more interesting. Again, the two NOLA chefs incorporated Louisiana aspects into the first challenge. Neither got accolades.
Sichel remains cocky and obnoxious. He doesn't appear to be a victim of creative editing. He looks like a jerk. I'd be hiding out until I was kicked off if I looked the way he appears, so far, on the show. It's disappointing. I'm hoping as the shows go on that he's able to switch gears and redeem himself or that he did so, rather. I feel sorry for him because watching him makes me cringe.
On the other hand, Justin comes off as humble and very likable if not a bit overwhelmed. I'm pulling for him to hang in there. I thought his kale dish was a good option. No one mentioned it so I assume it was acceptable. He wasn't in the bottom or at the top.
The cooking at Commander's segment was very entertaining and I enjoyed seeing the dishes from 4 Commander's Chefs' eras. That was fun. Sad that Jamie Shannon couldn't be there with Paul P, Emeril and Tory. RIP. Fun to see that group together.
Lally and Ti were representing. Very nice portrayal of a fine New Orleans restaurant.
Justin apparently slammed it on dessert.
If the rest of the shows are similar to this one, I'll enjoy the rest of the season.

That's pretty much how he is in real life. Proving not all reality is fake.

This fricking guy is pissing me off.
When he dumped that ladies okra slices on the counter top, he should have been decked.
What a shitebag move, as if removing 3 slices per plate is some time exhausting chore.
I'm counting the seconds until he is bounced from the show. It's a shame he took a spot from another local chef.

True.
Maybe Sichel got caught up in the moment and I suspect they aren't leaving any of that out. They could be omitting moments where he acts like a nice person, but he sure looks bad.
He did try to give them a verbal tour of the area when he was driving them to the swamp site and a crawfish boil. I thought that was all nice.
Sichel provider them with material. Have no idea if Justin did, but his interviews are mild mannered.
