What would Metallica be like if Cliff Burton had never died?

Let's face it: Metallica was better with Burton.
"Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" are two of the best metal albums ever put out, and "Kill 'Em All" ain't half bad for a debut.
Now, I'm not saying that Metallica post-Burton was bad, because I very much enjoy "...And Justice For All," "Metallica," "Load," and "Reload," however, I can't help but think that the Metallica we have come to know would be very different.
As I understand it, Burton was more of the creative leader of the group. I remember an interview where James talked about how Burton would regularly teach the rest of the guys music theory.
I think Metallica may not have been as commercially successful with Burton but would have perhaps been more artistically genuine.
What do you think?

They'd be exactly the same. AJFO would sound better though.

For starters, you'd be able to hear the low end in And Justice for All. The mix on that album is a crime.
I do think they would've crossed over. However, I think he would've made the Load sessions even weirder and more ambitious. Which would have pissed fans off even more.

Someone redubbed the entire album and turned the bass up to where you can actually hear it. This guy did a pretty good job. Worth a listen if you've never heard it before.

The Black Album would not exist, nor would have any of the other wretched crap they've put out in the years since he died. He'd have never put his name on that bullshite.
Their songwriting would not have taken an complete nosedive.
They would have still been insanely popular, but they would not have lost all credibility like they have.
Lars and James would not be able to lie and act like they were the only ones that really mattered as far the music goes. Cliff was the main force behind their sound, contrary to what they've said in the years since he died.

Mustaine was such a drunk that other drunks wanted him gone? Burton I assume had some demons too. Mocking the Black album is stupid. It is awesome. Burton "not signing off on it" would equal them not growing as a band. You can't be all heavy all the time. You can, but you would be Slayer who are not nearly as relevant historically.
Had they not gotten rid of mustaine they may never have gotten started. Had cliff not died they may never have gotten the work done that they did. Passion and appreciation for what they had.

Not sure if Newsted was handicapped creatively with his basslines or Cliff was just that much more creative, but Cliff's basslines were infinitely better than Jason's. Cliff also wrote the acoustic intros to Fight Fire with Fire and Battery, I believe. Cliff was into classical and like previously stated, understood music theory much better than James or anyone else.

Another band and another genre and time but, what if Andy Wood had never died? No Pearl Jam? Eddie Vedder is still a security guard, or that old dude in a cover bar-band? He dies and you have a guy move to Seattle with a bunch of motivated guys who are able to now hold it together for 20 plus years. Metallica is pushing up on 30.
Had Burton died in 1994 after 10 years together and huge success they would have probably went the way of Led Zepplin and said screw it and broke up. Mother Love Bone would not have had the legs to sustain 20+years? IMO.

It was more that Mustaine is a strong personality and kind of a dick (he would do shite like pour beer all over Ron McGovney's bass and punch James in the face when James kicked his dog). Dave wasn't going to lay down and roll over for Lars, and that combined with his prickly and sometimes violent personality was the real cause for his dismissal.

Seeing as they'd grown as a band by leaps and bounds between the first three albums, that statement makes no sense at all.

You can 'not be heavy all the time' and still write good songs, which unfortunately they didn't.
And all heavy all the time has sure worked out fine for many other bands, and not just Slayer.

Megadeth has never stopped making great music. His catalog of awesome tunes dwarfs Metallica's after ...And Justice. Hell, he's put out more good albums in just the last decade than Metallica has over their whole career.

Cliff Burton was and is the best bassist to ever touch a guitar. BUT, I think Metallica getting Jason was also one of the best things they ever did. You can't tell me you didn't like his backing vocals. Dude was a monster live.
